Opoutere itself is a beautiful place, lovely beaches and forest walks. About the actual hostel,... not a lot, outdoor picnik tables were nice..If you like school camps you may enjoy this hostel

Overview

Opoutere is an historic converted schoolhouse overlooking a sheltered estuary. Set in bush and gardens with great views over the estuary and to the ocean, this homely hostel offers peace and tranquility in a relaxed Coromandel hideaway. The hostel offers free canoes for guests staying.

Opoutere is one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal areas on the Coromandel Peninsula yet is still close to main centers. The estuary mouth is host to a nesting ground of major significance “The Wharekawa Wildlife Refuge - home of the Dotterel bird Recovery Program. A DOC ranger is on site between September and February. You can learn all about this endangered species.

Bush walks are nearby: beach swimming, canoeing, fishing, seafood & shell gathering are possible in the estuary and ocean. Relax and breathe in the beauty.

Accommodation Information

The hostel offers a wide range of room types from standard dormitory style to double and twin rooms, to family cabins with or without bathrooms. We offer female and male only dorm rooms as well as mixed rooms. Linen is provided in all rooms/ beds. The use of sleeping bags is not permitted.
All private rooms have towels provided as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The layout of the property allows for plenty of space for children to play, and for the adults to relax and enjoy the view over the estuary.

YHA New Zealand is a non-profit membership organization. Non-members pay an additional NZ$3 per person per night fee upon check-in. Memberships can be purchased online or at the hostel. Location Information

The hostel is located 16 km north of Whangamata on SH25. It is only a short drive from Thames, Waihi and Hot Water Beach. From Auckland or Hamilton, please allow two hours to get to us. From Tauranga it takes around 1.5 hours. If you travel from Rotorua you may want to allow about 3 hours.
