Welcome to Chillawhile in Oamaru! We are a great place for lovers of people, music, art, books, food and wine and are a backpackers hostel with atmosphere, heart & soul!

Chillawhile began as a dream, a vision; it began on my travels with desires to transform every great building into a hostel.

Chillawhile translation is 'to relax for a time'. Now Chillawhile lives and breathes a life of it’s own, we created it, and it has evolved into something far greater and more special than I could have ever imagined. The space is your own, a gift from us to you.

Chillawhile is a creative space, people that never considered themselves creative are all of a sudden filled up to the rim with a desire to create, people that never played an instrument learn to play the piano or the guitar and they learn from and are inspired by the people around them.

Come for the atmosphere and stay for the amenities!

We have spacious and comfy dormitories, a kitchen and bathroom on both floors, free continental breakfast, free Internet and Wi-Fi access available.

We also have an open art gallery studio (canvas, paints, brushes), a piano, organ, drums, didgeridoo & guitars and offer guests drumming and Maori Poi Workshops.

Loads of Lucky Pot Dinners, BBQ's and outside fire evenings to enjoy.

Other facilities include a sun room, giant jenga, a book exchange, a herb garden and outside fire. Bicycles are available for rent.

Accommodation Information

We are a small backpackers of 24 beds. Our rooms are spacious and comfortable. The beds are complete, all you need to bring is yourself. Our check out time is 11.30am

Location Information

Oamaru is central to the South Island on the East Coast of New Zealand, 3 hours south of Christchurch and 1 hour 20 minutes North of Dunedin. From Oamaru you can drive easily to Mount Cook and enjoy Elephant Rocks and Clay Cliffs along the way.
