Mt Ruapehu is home to New Zealand's two largest Ski Areas,Whakapapa and Turoa.

National Park Village is in a prime situation to service both Whakapapa Ski Area and Turoa Ski Area.

Whakapapa Ski Area is located on the north western slopes, 20 minutes from National Park Village, and has spectacular views across central North Island. Whakapapa's Happy Valley is renowned for its world class beginner facilities. But has also numerous options for the intermediate and more advanced skier and boarder. Turoa Ski Area is located on the south western slopes, 45 minutes from National Park Village, with spectacular views towards Mt Taranaki. Also Turoa is a supreme winter playground for beginner’s right through to advanced skiers and boarders.

At Howard's Lodge Ski shop we have a wide range of rental skis and snowboards. All our equipment is regularly tuned. We even rent out jackets and pants.

Known widely as the best One-Day hike in New Zealand, the crossing takes in the most scenic and volcanically active areas of Tongariro National Park, passing between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes. Although only a day walk you must be prepared for quick and severe weather changes, temperatures can easily drop below 5 degrees. November through April is the best season for the walk.
Whanganui River (1- 5 days)

This remote river provides a wilderness haven for unique outdoor adventure. People of all levels of fitness and age can experience The Whanganui Journey. Canoe on the river for 1 -5 days totally cut off from the pressures of civilization. Enjoy the great bush covered valleys, towering bluffs and abundant birdlife.

Because Howard's Lodge is situated half way, it is the ideal place to stay before and after your trip.
The 42 Traverse (Grade 3/ 46 km one way)
The 42 Traverse (or Tongariro Forrest Crossing) is one of the premiers MTB rides in the North Island. Renowned for the long and of ten rutted down hills, to test even the most ardent Kamikaze MTB freak. The track surface varies from gravel to mush, some stream crossings and the inevitable uphills. The scenery is outstanding from wide vistas of all three volcanoes to lush unspoiled bush. The ride takes approximately 6-8hrs from Kapoors Rd to Owango, with several river crossings, taking in regenerating forest, the awesome Canyon valley and finishing with a fantastic downhill.

Scenic Flights

Departing from their base at the foot of Mt Ruapehu,Mountain Air will fly you over the three volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.

You'll even fly over Ruapehu's steaming Crater Lake, which last erupted in 1996. The views from 3000 meters are stunning
Fishing

Ruapehu's lakes, rivers and mountain streams offer some of the best trout fishing in the world. With rivers such as the Tongariro, Whakapapa and Manganui-o-teao, it's a fly fisherman's paradise
