Big Tree (formerly known as Redwood Lodge) is a homely lodge with character! A large colonial villa and former vicarage and features unique native timber paneling and furniture.
We are a self-catering accommodation with shared facilities which includes a comfortable open plan lounge area with log burner, large communal kitchen and new spacious bathrooms with free laundry facilities.
We offer free hi-speed wireless internet and entertainment including books, jigsaws, board games and a large DVD selection.
We also have lockable storage for skis/snowboards (or mountain bikes in summer) and a convenient ski tuning area. If tuning is not your thing, our resident trained snowboard/ski tuner can help you out.

Accommodation Information

We have Dorm Rooms which sleep 3, 4 or 5 and private double or twin rooms for couples. We also have a room with double & single beds which may be booked as a twin, double or double plus one. All rooms have individual beds not bunks. Shared facilities include 2 new shower rooms with hand basins, 2 toilets and 3 hand basins.
Little Tree Studio Unit available for guests who want more privacy and independence. This is a self contained studio with one queen and two single beds. It has a small kitchenette with grill and microwave for baking or micro-waving, a hot plate, toaster and jug. A separate room contains the shower, basin and toilet Towels and all linen are supplied. Luxury at budget pricing. Minimum of 2 people may book this accommodation unit for a minimum of 2 nights stay...

Location Information

We are in Methven Mt Hut Village close to the Mt Hutt Ski Field and are an easy drive to Porters Pass and the Canterbury "Clubfields" which are ski areas operated by small ski clubs for their members however anyone is welcome (Mt Olympus, Broken River and Craidieburn).
Besides skiing, there are plenty of other activities available including hot air balloon rides, tandem sky diving, golf, absailing, horse riding, cycling, fishing and many mountain & bush walks.
Within easy 5mins walking distance of Big Tree Lodge are several bars and coffee shops. The Paradiso Art House Movie Theatre puts on extra shows when needed. The i-site visitor centre is in the main street and has 3 ski and snowboard shops close by. This boutique village is surprisingly well equipped with 2 supermarkets, galleries, an indoor skate park, book shop, laundromat and a gymnasium. Methven has many eateries, most of which are 5 minutes from our backpacker lodge. We think Dom's is terrific (the chicken/cranberry pizza is to die for) and the pubs & restaurants are pretty good too!
