Liked: Close to main area of the town

Disliked: Our room was dank and smelled terrible. The air was so musty and bad that it was unbearable to sleep there. My wife and I slept in the common room (shared space) on the couches instead. At the very least, management should not rent out any rooms that are in this kind of condition. A simple indication of how little attention the management pays to their facilities is the kitchen and trash situation. First of all, the stove was not labelled so we couldn't even tell which direction to turn the knobs. We asked other people staying there and they also complained that they just had to guess. Secondly, and even worse, the trash was overflowing in the kitchen. The receptionist left the hostel at 8pm, and was wandering around with nothing to do before that time, but did not attend to the trash problem. Management has obviously not set clear expectations for their employees and/or does not enforce any expectations. We mentioned the poor quality of this hostel to a receptionist at another hostel in another city - she said that it's been this way since her friend used to work there ten years ago.

Liked: Staff were really friendly and didnt charge any extra when we made a mistake with our booking. Great place and a good base for franz josef.

Liked: Great place to stay in Franz Josef. Helpful staff. Ok rooms and showers. Nice TV-room. Ok Kitchen.

Disliked: The free soup is kind of strange. It would be better to offer some kind of breakfast

Liked: Free soup is actually good, although heavy on pepper. :) Nice facilities. Good overall atmosphere.

Disliked: Coin-operated internet is a bit expensive.

Liked: Friendly and helpful staff, good location, deal at local bar for food and drink.

Disliked: Door lock a bit difficult to open but did offer to change my room if I found it difficult.

Liked: The beds were comfortable.

Disliked: The kitchen wasn't well equipped and the stuff that was there was dirty. The sofas in the tv room werent sofas at all they were benches. In general it just lacked a cosy feel, and it was cold. The receptionist lost our booking (although she said she had recieved the email about us staying). She then couldnt figure out how much to charge us and tried to move us from a 6 bed to a 9 bed dorm claiming they were the same price (not true). Eventually it was all resolved but it took her a good few hours to figure out.

Liked: The location is good and near to everything that Franz Josef has to offer! The Intercity and Naked buses stop almost right in front of the hostel so no worries for those without cars. A spa pool, movies and popcorn are available free of charge but we didn't make use of them. The free vegetable soup (not especially tasty) is a blessing on cold evenings and after tackling the glacier walk.

Disliked: There were not enough cooking utensils. Though old this place has character.

Liked: good facilities, well equipped kitchen close to the atm

Disliked: the reception-guy! he didn't want me go to the hot tub eventhough there was 10mins time left! The showers could use a little more water pressure

Liked: Nice, large room with good facilities including it's own fridge and free tea, coffee and milk.

Liked: The hot tub & the free popcorn! The free soup was a nice touch but beware of the heaps of pepper in it!!

Disliked: The hostel was comfortable enough but it needs a bit of a facelift & there's no lockers available (despite the fact that most people are heading out on full day Glacier trips).

Liked: Kitchen area was nice and roomy as well as all the communal areas. The staff are very friendly. Soup every evening was a nice touch though to be honest it wasnt the best soup in the world. Popcorn was also a really nice idea.
