Liked: Very clean hostel and the staff were very helpful. Good location close to the centre of town.

Liked: I really enjoyed how helpful the staff was with helping us plan our adventure, and I also really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. There was a big communal room where everyone hung out and watched movies together.

Disliked: Didn't really dislike anything about the property, we had a great time during our stay :)

Disliked: Didn't get new bedsheets, probaply because they didn't know which beds are free...

Liked: Lots of great stuff provided by the hostel, free bakery food at 4pm and soup as well as bread for breakfast. complimentrary internet is good and the bar downstairs is fun.

Disliked: The reception always empty and you have to call the owners to get them to come.

Liked: The location is great, next to all the other backpackers in town. We had a private double which was a good size, nice and clean, with a comfy bed. The staff were really friendly and helpful too!

Disliked: There weren't quite enough parking spaces but you can park on the road so it's not a biggie.

Liked: Great atmosphere and really helpful staff. Was made to feel very welcome, staff are very knowledgable about local area. Nice and clean hostel.

Disliked: No wireless and there are only two computers with internet, so it takes some time to get to the computer.

Liked: The staff at this hostel were extraordinary. I have stayed in hostels across Europe, Asia and New Zealand and the Montrose was honestly where I received the most outstanding genuine, caring assistance when faced with a couple of travel problems. Calls were made on my behalf, very helpful advice was given and I was able to continue on my travels without a problem. Highly recommended!

Liked: free internet even though its only on 2 computers, during the day it was very easy to get access but at night a little bit crazy. staff seemed really nice and helpful when telling you about the nearby walks and things to do. free movies were good as the weather is so changeable. if its a nice day i definately recommend walking to the glacier, it takes around 1 hour to the car park at the glacier but it gives you spectacular views allong the way and part of it is through rainforest. amazing.

Disliked: part of kitchen was open plan right into the main lounge/tv area so in the evening it was hard to listen to the tv if you wanted to also had to put up with the cooking smells.

Liked: Great location, and the receptionist was very helpful. Good sized cooking area and lounge area. Free internet was also a plus!

Disliked: No lockers in the rooms.

Liked: Free internet is nice,although the machines are slow and dated... Big rooms and large TV area.

Disliked: Quite noisy in TV room as it sits beside the open kitchen, Beds are not the best compared to most hostels. no Wi-FI

Liked: Montrose Backpackers was very clean, and had a good feel to it. It is also very well positioned in Franz Josef. The staff were also very friendly and always helpful!

Disliked: Not much.

Liked: There is are very large common space areas including two kitchens for self-catering.

Liked: We stayed here the night before we did the glacier full day trip. We would have stayed longer but time didn't permit. The hostel itself is pretty nice - really big kitchen/dining/chillout area which was great (not that we used it much). They have 2 free computers for use which is handy. Off-street parking too which is cool. Staff were helpful and everything else was OK by hostel standards. Pretty good little discount coupons for some of the local pubs which we took advantage of. Franz Joseph is a small town so I would advise stocking up on things before you arrive here if possible as there is only a Four Square in town and they charge like a raging bull. I would stay here again.

Liked: good size dorm room, large communal area by the kitchen, close by to the blue bar-good discounts if you stay here on food, friendly and helpful staff, central heating on a cold night!

Liked: Really clean and very friendly staff, who try to give their best to ensure a nice stay for you.

Disliked: It advertises "free internet", which can easily be misunderstood as free wi-fi but is just the free use of a couple computers with internet access. however, it's still a rarity to have free internet access in NZ, so it's actually also a bonus point for this hostel.
