Liked: The owners were polite and friendly but nothing about the hostel itself

Disliked: It was dirty. The kitchen and bathrooms needed cleaning and no evidence of cleaning throughout my stay.

Liked: It's reasonable priced as we arrived late at Christchurch, and needed to depart to other places the early next morning.

Disliked: Room of improvement on the cleanliness of the property.

Liked: It’s the cheapest one I could find in Christchurch.

Disliked: It’s an old dilapidated nursing home turned in to a hostel. Definitely the worst place I stayed during my visit to NZ. The rooms and beds are old and musky. The bathrooms are not very nice and has some maintenance issues, but works ok. The staff is friendlyish, but the atmosphere is not very welcoming. It also has to be said that the current situation in Christchurch is very depressing with the entire city centre being cordoned off and rebuilding being interrupted by frequent aftershocks. (I thought it was someone going at it in the bottom bunk).

Liked: The owner was helpful and pleasant - referred me to a good shuttle bus company and gave me directions to the shops.

Disliked: This is a dilapidated former nursing home. It is not clean (esp. kitchen) and not particularly comfortable. There were a few holes in the floor, it was cold and draughty, I thought the bed was going to collapse under my modest weight, and I don't know what that white stuff was on the spare blanket.

Liked: Travelling in the off-season, none of the hostels were full, but some still insisted on filling up dorm rooms rather than giving people space and spreading them between dorm rooms. At Tranquil Lodge, the owner used all the rooms, so there were just 1 or 2 to a room when it was quiet. Also there was plenty room in the common areas (dining room/computer room, TV room, kitchen, outside seating area) to mix with other people. Nice hot showers too!

Liked: the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful, gave us lots of advice bout our trip and even gave us a free lift into town. best place we stayed in 3 months of travelling, very peaceful and relaxing for well needed rest.
