Liked: The ONLY thing positive I can say is that the staff were great - very friendly, laid-back, helpful, etc. This place touts itself as a trendy hostel with a "great rooftop bar", etc. The reality is that it's a dump. It's true that you can go up on the roof, but up there it is just bare concrete with rebar sticking out all over the place. There is no railing, you could fall to your death if you are not careful. There were only about 4 chairs, one rickety table and a moldy sofa. There were wires and trash and chunks of concrete and rebar all over the roof to trip over. There was a kitchen, but the stove either would not light or would not stay lit. There was a sink - but no water, so it was always full of dirty dishes.Finally, the worst part: There was ONE bathroom for 16 people...and there was almost always a long wait to use it. Not fun when you need to go. It was even in use at 4 am when I had to get up in the night to use it.Forget about taking a hot shower. There was only a drip-drip (literally like one drop every few seconds) of water coming out of the shower head the evening I tried to use it and that water was ice cold.. As far as meeting people, yes we did have a few conversations with other guests, but the main topic of conversation there was about how much the hostel sucked and where else could people go.

Liked: The staff was all very helpful, even with things extending beyond the normal call of duty. carlos was very helpful in trying to find flights and other info to make our travel plans easier.

Liked: It was a very good experience ! For me, the atmosphere and the staff are perfect ! They are always present if you have a problem or if you need some advices / tips...on playa del carmen or on differents things. You can arrive alone and finally you leave with many friends and good memories for your life !Don't hesitate to go to the Happy Gecko if you want to have fun, friends (from every age), new experience and of course, a good place to stay because the hostel is clean, with warm water, and the best for me, it is located in the centre and very near from the beach and the street 12 (the street of partys !!).

Liked: PROS:In the 5-bed dorm room, two of the beds are doubles - I had never before slept in a double bed in a hostel. There's a well-stocked book exchange, and the location is pretty much unbeatable considering the price.CONS:none of the doors are locked - even the dorm room door is left open. However, they do provide some lockable lockers which are big enough to fit a computer bag and couple of other things. Flyscreens on open windows are nice, but this also means that music from reception and the bars around the place is a bit intrusive.nonetheless, the price and the location make it all worth while.

Liked: The roof terrace is great to meet people but if its raining theres really nowhere to go. I arrived with a reservation and they still tried to make me pay the full price. One bathroom between 16 people is also completely ridiculous and when you actually got in there it was always flooded and dirty. No sign of the free towel or washing machines either.

Liked: Happy Gecko is a great hostel on a top location in Playa del Carmen. Especially the roof-terrass is great for meeting people and for cooking in the open-air kitchen.

Liked: The hostel is perfectely located, and the staff is the most friendly, helpful and integrating staff of every hostel I`ve been to Mexico. The rooms are comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need to cook. The bathrooms are big and clean. It was a great stay!!!

Liked: The air conditioning worked well, my room had a small kitchen area with a sink, refridgerator and gas burners. And, each room has a bathroom with shower. Quiet, well located near the main strip. However, the communal area is tiny so you only meet the other travellers in passing.
