Hostal Zócalo, the former home of José Peón Contreras (famed playwright, poet, physician and politician) is located on the main square ("plaza mayor" or "zocalo") of Mérida - the laid-back colonial capital of the Yucatán State. Merida is the ideal base for exploring the Yucatan, and the quietly elegant Hostel Zocalo is a perfect place for kicking back to relax after spending full days roaming around ancient Mayan cities and archaeological sites (Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Kabah, Labna, Sayil and Xlapak), revisiting colonial history of the Spanish Conquestadors, touring one of the old Haciendas (henequen plantations), swimming in spectacular natural wells (cenotes), or just simply marvelling in the diverse cultures and colourful fauna and flora of our Yucatán peninsula.

The kitchen is the heart of this lovely house. People gather at the kitchen table for dining, music, and general good cheer both day and night, but there are many additional spaces to enjoy, including a 25 metre long hall - or pasillo - and the lower deck garden.

All stays include these services for free: breakfast, Wi-Fi, purified drinking water, linens and towels use. We also have computers for guest use, if needed.

The house comfortably accommodates people of all stripes. We have private rooms with a balcony overlooking the zocalo and park, private rooms with private bath, more basic and economical private rooms and females only or male or mixed dormitories. Whoever you are – a young backpacker, graduate school researcher, young family, professional attending a conference, 60-year-olds trekking your way around the world or anything inbetween - Hostal Zocalo has a place for you and we welcome you all.
