About The Sleeping Camel
The owners have spent 10 years travelling & leading tours throughout Africa and using their experience have set up a little oasis in Bamako for travellers to use as a home away from home and as a base for further travel in West Africa.
The Sleeping Camel also features its very own well-stocked bar and restaurant, and a peaceful garden to relax in.
We have both English and French-speaking staff, and are always happy to help with advice on travel in Mali as well as further afield in Africa. We aim to make your time in West Africa a pleasurable one. We can offer advice on independent travel or if you wish can help you find local guides who have proven themselves to us & can take some of the hard work out of your adventure.
We have a tranquil garden bar/restaurant area, the perfect place to relax with a well-chilled drink after a hot day in the city or a long dusty African bus journey.
Our restaurant serves freshly-prepared food, with a menu featuring typically Malian as well as international dishes, available to order from 8am-8.30pm. If you would like food outside these times, this can normally be arranged with advance notice.
On site services include Satellite TV, free wi-fi for guests, laundry service, free luggage storage, a comfortable common-room area, a book-swap as well as a library of West African guide books and maps to consult. We can also arrange airport transfers.
Accommodation Information
We have a number of different accommodation options, with something to suit all travelling styles & budgets.
Our standard rooms are fan-cooled, with shared bathroom facilities, and feature 1 double & 1 single bed, so can be utilised as either single, twin, double or triple rooms.
We also have ‘deluxe’ air-conditioned rooms, available both en-suite or with shared bathroom. These rooms feature 2 double beds, so again can be utilised as twin, double, etc.
For larger groups or families, we have a family room, which features 2 bedrooms (one with 2 doubles, the other with 1 double & 1 single bed), en-suite bathroom, and a private sitting room. This room is fan-cooled not air-con.
As well as our private rooms, we also offer a comfortable spacious dorm with en-suite bathroom and lockable storage trunks.
All our rooms benefit from 24hr hot showers, either in private bathroom or shared facilities.
For those travelling with their own tent or overland vehicle, we also offer the option to camp within our peaceful leafy garden, with secure off-street parking.
Location Information
We are located in a quiet area of Badalabougou, close to the Niger River. We are behind the German Embassy & opposite the Egyptian Embassy, so our security is excellent. There are a number of excellent local bars, eating places, banks and shops within easy walking distance, including the very popular 24hr Amandine Patisserie, and the well-stocked Azar Supermarket.
A short walk across the Pont des Martyrs bridge crossing the river brings you into the bustling heart of Bamako with all its attractions, including the large and colourful central market, an excellent museum, many restaurants offering a range of local and international cuisines, along with bars & nightclubs showcasing live music from the renowned Malian music scene.
We are also just a few minutes walk from the Palais de Culture, which often features live music.
