About Yellow House KL

Our house is a base for travellers to volunteer throughout Kuala Lumpur.

The House
Our old wooden house was renovated by a group of volunteers from all around the globe in May/July 2013. The construction was made with as many recycled materials as possible with plastic doors being made into our outside showers, discarded tiles and wood were turned into our kitchen cupboards and our wall cavities are filled with old plasterboard thrown away from a factory refit.

The house is basic but has all you need including free WiFi and a fully equipped kitchen with fridge/freezer.

Teaching at the Refugee Learning Centre
Only a 10 minute walk from our house is a humble learning centre which is providing basic education for 40+ transit refugee children from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Myanmar before their families are relocated in Australia, UK or mainland Europe. As the children are still in transit they are not allowed to go to government school even though some have been in Malaysia for more than 4 years. The centre is doing it's best to bridge this gap. The centre is well run with adequate english teachers but they dont have any science teachers or afternoon activities. This is where we come in with our volunteer co-ordinators leading science lessons and sporting activities for the children.

Free Trees
This is a project where you can help re-purpose old discarded pallets into something useful at
either the Alzheimers home or for the local tribal villagers (Orang Asli).

Eco Soaps
My Khatulistiwa has recently signed a contract with a Malaysian University to experiment with
bacteria to create pigmentation in eco-soaps and shampoos. This is an exciting project and one
that is just at its beginning.

Homeless shelter – You can help on a nightly basis at the local homeless shelter and soup kitchens.

Alzheimer's Home - we have started a vertical sensory herb garden using wooden pallets. The gardens need constant maintenance so you can get involved with this. If you have medical skills you may also be able to help more hands on with the patients.

The important thing to remember is that this experience is unique, even if you volunteer for a few hours your sheer presence will provide a little hope and glimmer to some communities in Kuala Lumpur.
