Liked: We ammended our booking before boarding the plane to Tokyo. Mieko very kindly left detailed iinstructions for our incredibly late arrival and greeted us the next day with such warmth. JGH is very cosy and perfect for the backpacker with a budget and desire to learn more of Japan.

Liked: Everyone was so nice and friendly and very helpful. Even though the individual space is very small, the atmosphere is great. It felt more like being at home than being at a hostel. JGH has a lot of character and is probably one of the most fun places to stay at.

Disliked: the kitchen equipment is not really sufficient for cooking.

Liked: Even tho it was a small place, its very cosy. It got allot of character to it. For people who like to experience Japan for its essence this is a very good hostel to stay at.

Disliked: It could get really cold, but mind I was there in the winter time and it doesnt take much to make me get cold. They have heating systems.. extra blankets if you wish more than what your provided with. So this is not really a dislike.

Liked: Extremely friendly and helpful staff; very warm and welcoming. Free wifi is good too considering Tokyo's distinct lack of wifi facilities.

Disliked: The rooms can be quite small, which is a shock. But it's easy to adjust, and understandable given the low cost.

Liked: The only decent thing aboutthe property maybe is accomodating for cheap backpackers within the dorm rooms. Hence typically speaking, the people staying at the backpacker place are good value. The staff who do all the hard work and clean are fantastic. * that does not include the owner, Meiko *

Disliked: What a disappointment. I've travelled constantly in total for about 1 year of my life, and on top of that 4 years living abroad. I know what to expect when asking for a *private room*. When being charged around 3500円 ( discounted from 4500円 ) for a private room, I expect a room, not to be put in a VERY LARGE ROOM subdivided into 3 private rooms and two dormitory rooms with make shift walls running 3/4's up to the ceiling, little lighting, no room for my backpack except on the top bunk. The only privacy about it was changing clothes. I booked for 4 nights and on the 1st night tried to tough it out, however it was a disappointment. The next morning I advised Meiko that i was disappointed with the room, indicating it’s not a private room. Her response "but i gave you a bigger bed" . I told her that I would like to cancel, staying one more night, and therefore giving her ample time to fill the bed. I also told her that if noone came for the room within the next few days, she could keep the money, however she refused to give any sort of refund. "すみません。。 ありがとう" I had been travelling 3 weeks in Japan prior to this getting great value for accommodation and to be honest, never had a bad thing to say whilst travelling throughout my life. This is my first bad "review". I also told fellow friends both Japanese and gaijin living in Tokyo, and their response "is she Japanese?" Her "accommodating / helpfulness" exists within her busy schedule, of which most of the day she wasn’t in the vicinity of the hostel. I think I could keep going on for another 500 words LOL . peace out, I suggest Aizuya which is fantastic , or shinagawa hostel which also has a great vibe and cool area as near shinagawa there’s lots of ramen places to check out.

Liked: Mieko the owner is fantastic, friendly and very helpful. I had my money and cards stolen in New Zealand and she was really really helpful passing emails and messages to and from my family and chasing up a parcel sent to me from England it took ages to arrive. Her English is fantastic. This property has real character and the other travellers here bond really well as the atmosphere is really inter-continental. Totally first class!

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike about this place if you are a human being!!!

Liked: Its unique charactor. You can see the origins of the Harujuko montage fashions in the owners interiors.

Disliked: It has fabric walls so can be a little noisy- be the guests were all respectful enough of this- and its offset by the added privacy of the partions.

Liked: The price. The hostel is basic and cheap. I enjoyed my stay there and was allowed free luggage storage while I went to Kyoto.

Disliked: The Hostel is really Old School and is payment just for your bed. If you want anything else then you will have to pay for it which is fair enough as the price is really cheap for Tokyo. Rooms are tiny and have no space but air-con is good and mattresses seem fine. Just beware that it is a long way from the centre and you will spend at least 400-500yen a day on train tickets so with this factored in another hostel could work out better value. There is also a 180 yen extra charge if you stay just one night.

Liked: Since you'll literarily be packed upon one and another it will be hard not to be able to meet someone.

Disliked: Its a no nonsense low budget hostel, make no mistake: you'll get what you pay for, and not a thing more. I you don't mind being cubed up like lego toys with four or five people in a one person room thats part of a series of such rooms in what was originally a normal size room and sleeping on a bed with a mattress that's the full 3cm thick and intend not to spend time in the common rooms that fit 4 people at once which is about 5% of the hostel capacity and in return are looking for a dirt cheap accommodation then this is the place for you. If the description above doesn't fully apply to you: you'll be disappointed.

Liked: The price is very good for Tokyo. The free breakfast is amazing (filling and traditional Japanese style). There is a full kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, etc.The bathroom has a good hot shower. The staff can speak English quite well.

Disliked: The space that you get to sleep is definitely tiny, but really not that bad as long as you just take it for what it is. Upon arrival I felt like there were a lot of rules, but after being here for a couple of days they aren't as intense as they seem. It is slightly out of the way of a lot of sections, but the train is near enough that it is no issue.
