Liked: Amazing hostel, really good for the money. Perfect location in a fairly quiet suburb from Tokyo with a JR Station close by to take you straight to Ueno, Akihabara and Tokyo station. Perfect for JR Pass holders.

Disliked: The hostel is quite small but I think that's what makes it so cosy. No complaints otherwise.

Liked: It's cheap for Tokyo. The staff (Meiko) was friendly. Despite being out of the centre it was relatively easy to get in and out.

Disliked: Far far too noisy. The 'double rooms' are just partitions in a bigger room so you can hear every movement anyone makes. The rooms downstairs appear to be in some sort of converted shed!! They have created 'rooms' in such little space, it may as well be open plan. You can hear every word anyone says. There is no bar or sitting area which means everyone congregates in any available space, which is invariably outside the 'shed', which is meant to be the sleeping area. They have posters up everywhere which justifies the lack of space (population in Tokyo, cheap price etc), which is fair enough, wasn'ty biggest concern as I would be happy with a capsule bed. But very difficult to sleep with no physical wall between you and the street! So noisy. Despite signs saying to please be quiet after 10pm, there is nobody to police this. I feel sorry for the neighbours, seems like a nice residential street.

Liked: Exactly what you pay for. Everything you could need is just around the corner! ATMs, laundromats, convenience stores etc. The map given for directions is also very useful. Fun especially if you are traveling alone, lots of people staying in a small space means you can easily find someone to chat to or even make travel plans together! Great starting base for me as Tokyo was my starting base before taking the Shinkansen out to Aomori - turned out the train station I needed to get to was only twenty minutes away and on the same line! Location is about 30-40minutes from central Tokyo, but the JR line is just 5 to 7 minutes away. Might not be the best place for you if you intend to party in central Tokyo.

Disliked: Very cramped. Not recommended for the claustrophobic. Also, the sheets gave me dust reactions. Place feels clean but probably isn't 100% clean.

Liked: Staff was friendly although she didn't speak English very well. Cheap place.

Disliked: Far too many things. This is my first time at this hostel and fouth one I try in Tokyo: far the worst I would say. The hostel is very very tiny and it's very annoying if you have a big luggage. You have to pay a 2000 yen deposit for a key to a door that's basically a wooden panel with 50cm space on top (not exactly safe). They somehow managed to obtain 5 rooms from a super small space, just by inserting something which is ridiculous to call "wall". I could actually hear everything the other people were saying because it's like being in a big room, only you cannot see the others, but hear them talk and snore, and feel the person's staying in the other side of the wall moving in the bed, well yes. So bear in mind that privacy is a remote dream in this hostel. The sheets are very old although they were clean. The toilet is dirty and the kitchen supplies are there since ages. No kettle or toaster. All in all for 500yen more it's easy to find a better and cleaner place, even wider. I really didnt like the long writing they hang on the wall on how there are places over there that chsrge you more and how people that stay at JGH should value what they provide. Comparing with worse places it's a bit pathetic if you don't provide your clients AT LEAST with a clean place. So I would say unless you are broke, don't book here.

Liked: It was very affordable, and wasn't to far out. On the budget me and my friends were on it was exactly what we needed.

Disliked: When we got there the sheets seemed clean which was to be expected but all of us got really sniffly there, which makes me suspect that there may be mold in the mattresses. The bathroom needed to be cleaned regularly. There was about 1 month of dust on the toilet back.

Staff are really helpful, Ayumi and Mieko are lovely hosts and will do everything they can to help you out, including booking onward travel . You can leave your bags with them before you check in. Liked: A really cosy, friendly place. Helpful, nice staff. Good cheap food nearby. Good value for money

Disliked: Although its near the metro line it's 25/30 mins into the centre which can get a little tedious of going back and forth several times. The rooms are small and separated by ply wood and curtains, it wasn't a problem for us as it wasn't to busy but wouldn't of wanted to stop in the dorm if it was full!

Liked: The staff and the price

Disliked: Location and the "double" room I slept in. It was in the shelter in front of the main building, and it was basically a wooden plate on top of the common room, meaning that a lot of people were sitting right below my "room". Do not go for that "room". There was no keys, as there had been nothing stolen for 18 years, according to the staff.
