Liked: This was the best hostel we stayed at in Japan. First night we joined in a free Japanese calligraphy class, and the second night there was a live band. Dorm beds are Japanese style, half on the floor, half loft-style, and all can be screened off with blinds for privacy. Cafe downstairs serves good curry.

Liked: The best hostel I have stayed at. The staff were helpful and friendly, and the tatami rooms were comfortable and spacious (more so than a bunk bed). The place had a great atmosphere and really made an effort to take care of its guests. I came to Osaka a few times during my stay as it was quite central, and even when the hostel was fully booked the second time they welcomed me as a friend. The only minor downside is its distance to the nearest train station, but it only takes 5 minutes and the station is on the Osaka Loop line which is good for JR pass holders. The U-en is highly recommended.

Liked: All the little touches really make this place stand out from the others I have been in while travelling around Japan.for example they have a tiny little river running through the lobby area...So many other little things, like the Ninja shower, you have to experience for yourself!

Liked: U-en was a great place to stay. I was only able to visit Japan for 3 nights this time, but if I'm able to go back to Osaka, I will stay at U-en. The staff was really friendly, very helpful, and fun. Plus, they had some killer live music as well. The location was good for visiting everywhere in the Kansai area. It was a great experience

Liked: I ended up staying here for three nights, one night in a private double w/ a friend and two nights in the mixed dorm. It's close to Osaka castle but far from other things of interest. Besides that, this hostel has a lot of character. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. There's a bar/cafe on the ground floor, and the rooms are upstairs. There are two toilets and two showers, but I didn't have any problems getting a shower when I wanted one, though one day I had to go to the ground floor shower. That shower is much older Japanese style sitting, while the 2nd floor shower is nice and new. The dorm areas are semi-private which is nice. Each space is divided by blinds, some can be completely blocked off and some are only partially blocked off. The dorm room I stayed in was lofted, so there were two levels of tatami with futons. I would definitely stay here again my next time in Osaka.

Liked: Don't look for McDonald's. It moved. Take a left out of front of train station. Turn left on main street. Walk to the next street on directions and cross to the other side. Go south and turn left and it will be the vine covered building on the right.The Japanese beds were comfortable. It was nice to have plugs at each bed to charge things. The eating place downstairs is fine but then there is no free tea or coffee like in other hostels. Otherwise, it was OK.

Liked: Probably some of the kindest (and coolest) staff I've ever encountered. This hostel is not particularly central, but if you don't mind using the subway, JR, or riding a ¥200 bike into town, then it's not an issue.The "loft" style beds in the four bed dorm, are a unique novelty.Definitely a great place to meet other travellers, and have a drink from the bar.
