I read a review where the person said it made them think that back in its prime it would have been a grande place... still the service is charming! From the dear elderly man who promptly fetches your slippers and then waits for you quietly, with his warm smile, to collect your shoes for you to the cheerful receptionist eager to help you with anything. Old fashioed Japanese etiquette at its finest! If youre a highly private person though, I would book the room with the shower... or you will find yourself showering Japanese style in a public bath with others of your gender... although its not as embarrassing as it sounds as everyone else is very descreet too. Its well worth visiting the Ohgiya Ryokan... and Narita for that matter as its a gorgeous town!

Unique spacious Japanese style rooms with own toilet in room. Fridge, sink, TV and phone also in room. Hot thermos of water with green tea provided daily in room. Proximity to train stations (walking distance) and location to all sightseeing spots also within walking distance. Ryokan offers to pick you up from train station and return you there after your stay. Free internet station for use in lobby. Very friendly staff and helpful.

Pefect introduction or farewell to Japan. The staff was welcoming wihout being intrusive. The room was large and clean with a nice garden view - and a private toilet (!) - useful for our 5-year old.
We would certainly stay here again.

It's not a new place and has its own character--takes me back to older days when the place was likely full of people. My room overlooked the pond in the garden and the sound of water and nature was lovely. I was just looking for contemplation and quiet so would not recommend if looking for meeting people to party. I would not recommend getting their breakfast unless you're strapped for time--a cheaper value can be found elsewhere.

Everyone was very helpful and accomodating. The English-speaking owner helped me to confirm our next nights stay (who only spoke Japanese)? The pick up and delivery from the station, was not really necessary (close to station) but really helpful, given our level of tiredness coming off the plane. It was a bit pricey, but I managed to book the most was a bit pricey, but I managed to book the most expensive room and it was really lovely, with a garden and pool and splashing koi right outside our door. Everything seems a bit more pricey in Narita than Tokyo, but staying in Narita with its quaint streets, and incredible temple grounds at Narita-san? made the transition to the Orient from the West very doable. Our plan is to stay there again before we catch our plane out of Japan.
