Liked: I didn't like this hostel at all.

Disliked: The property is not clean, there's only 1 shower and toilet. You can hear everything that's going on in the rooms next door. When we arrived there was no welcoming feeling at all, they were only interested in getting our money.

Liked: Jerry is a very nice and helpful guy with lots of tips about Kyoto. The bikes that we hired were great! When we wanted to stay one more night we were upgraded to a bigger room without extra costs, great!

Liked: The location is great and they have good computers if you need the internet. Other services like tea/coffee and breakfast are also very nice.

Disliked: The major disadvantage of my stay at Sakura House was that the dormitories are located in the basement. Here it was very damp and smelled like mold. I stayed in the hostel for two nights and when I left all my clothes, including the ones I left in my suitcase, smelled like mold. This was quite disgusting, especially because you're sleeping in the smell as well. Also, it seemed like they cleaned the place EXCEPT the basement. I talked to some other guests staying the hostel about it and from what I gathered it is a good place to stay as long as you are not staying in the dorms. Also, there are no keys to the doors and no lockers are provided. Japan is a very safe country so it wasn't all that bad, but it might be good to know for people who don't like to leave their valuables out in the open.

Liked: Location is great, and it's very unexpensive.

Disliked: I have stayed in many hostels in Japan and Europe, and I must say, this one was one of the worst. The main problem was cleanliness... toilets and bathrooms were awkward!!! No soap in the container for more than 3 days (even after asking for it), hairs in the shower and basin, fungi, urin stench. Some other places also kept bad odors: Does someone ever clean the fridge? Rooms have tatamis, and mine had foot smell attached to them! I picked this place because it was cheaper than most, but next time I will rather spend some more yen.

Liked: The atmosphere was very nice with the others backpackers and with the staff of the hostel, but our room was very small and it was like in a bunker, we didn´t like it very much.

Liked: Good location, easy walking distance to many of the main sights, as well as downtown Kyoto. We found this hostel was a bit small and cramped, and the rooms we stayed in were stuffy. But, it was fairly cheap and we met lots of other great fellow travelers.

Liked: It's well located and there are various stores for affordable food nearby. Many shrines are within walking distance resp. easily accessible with train and bus. We enjoyed staying there.

Liked: Spent over an hour looking for the place. With the help of another guesthouse and an email later, we found the place but were locked out. After another email we finally got in but found the place to be average at best. Staff wasn't interested in helping out with a suggestion on where to find something to eat much less provide a map or directions to a site. We stayed in the basement which had a dungy and cluttered feel. Not a horrible travel experience, just generally sub-par.

Liked: Yumiko, the owner of the hostel, is a very very nice and sweet girl. She will give you advice on the attractions you want to go, and don't forget to take the bikes to go around the city offered by the hostel (it's only 600 yen per day which is the cheapest I could find)!! The location is also very good, you can simply walk around and you will reach many amazing temples.

Liked: Very friendly, small hostel for those that are tired of big, unpersonal hostels. Located on a quiet street, but within walking distance of Gion and other sights.The shower could be a bit bigger and warmer, though.

Liked: Even though we only stayed for one night, i would definitely recommend staying here if you visit Kyoto. Good location, really friendly/helpful staff (they let us stay till 10pm as we were waiting to get the night bus). Met some nice people, who seem to have been there a while, they also helped us out... where to go, eat etc. Our room was a decent enough size and all very clean.

Liked: Sakura House is a brilliant hostel! We stayed for 6 nights, 4 nights in a 4 bed dorm which is a tatami style room and 2 nights in a private twin. Avoid the basement dorm room if possible. It smelt of damp and had no windows. Also the mattresses were next to each other which some people might find a bit strange.The hostel is in a great location and also has cheap bike hire at ¥600 for the day so we walked or cycled everywhere. The hostel is very clean, has cheap laundry, free internet and a great kitchen and communal area.Junko is a fantastic manager. She was very helpful and was always available to answer any questions. She was also great at helping us learn a few Japanese phrases and treated us to trying some of her delicious Japanese cooking!This hostel has a great atmosphere and we're going to miss it! We definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a laid back hostel with a great location.
