Liked: A very nice and sweet place. The owner was so friendly - he tries to keep the prices low in every way. The place is really worth for the money. Free hot drinks are available all the time and in the morning you can have a free small breakfast. Also the internet is free to use. I would really recommend this place if you don't have so high standards. By buses you get easily everywhere in Kyoto.

Disliked: It was freezing cold inside but you got used to it and there are electric mattresses so that you can sleep in the night. But I might not go there again during wintertime, it really took an effort to go to the shower (the water was hot, anyway)... You have to be away from the hostel every day for about 4 hour (cleaning time). It wasn't so clean in the hostel ( eg. hair in the sheets).

Liked: The owner was very kind and helpful. The place was very clean.

Disliked: It is really really cold there in winter. The place is made of wood, so there's no general heating system. There are some space heaters, but it's hard to figure some of them out. It's also very cramped if you are taller than average.

Liked: Stuff was very helpfull and even more than helpfull? they were very kind. You can call manager any time and he easily solve any problem you have. You are really welcome in kanouya) You can rent a bike for 100 yen/ day. It is just like free! Before choosing kanouya i have read a lot of comments and some people say that it is too far from Kyoto station. I think that it is not important because if you will look at the map of Kyoto you will find out that Kinouya sets in the the middle of Kyoto. Obviously it is the best location! So i dont see any drawbacks.

Liked: Hostel manager was very nice. Double room was big. Is well located to tons of major bus lines with quick access to anywhere around the city. We never used the metro as the city buses went far more places and were good value if you bought the 500 yen day pass. Wifi was very quick.

Disliked: The hostel was empty the four nights we stayed there so we felt much more that we were just invading in someone's house. Definitely wouldn't recommend for lone travellers as it was quite awkward at times. Curtains are very thin so you will be waking up with the sun, none of the rooms lock (but it felt secure and there were lockers) and our room probably could have used a Hoover. But all in all, it was a fine place to stay.

Liked: A lot of good information offered that helped make our short stay a good one. The manager was helpful and easy going. The accommodation gave a good glimpse into the typical Japanese home and had a simple, comfortable and homey feel. Very quiet place in a quiet neighborhood. We slept so well there. Great temples and sights within easy walking distance or convenient busses. Free coffee, tea (always hot water available) was great after a rainy day.

Disliked: The lounge area is a little tight so not too conducive to hanging out.

Liked: Kanouya is a very small hostel and definitely has atmosphere. It's not located in a nice area of Kyoto and with the amazing bike rental service that is offered (100 yen a day!) you can get everywhere very quickly. Other facilities offered were also great.

Disliked: Kanouya is essentially a small house that the owner transformed into a hostel. Given it's size I at times felt I was intruding the owner's privacy, given that he's always around.

Liked: The japanese house even though a little cramped, had character and had a cozy feel to it. Stayed in the japanese style room which however was spacious, had tatami mats and lovely warm futon bedding. Sayoko (host) had put a lot of thought in providing facilities and catering for the guests needs.

Disliked: Customer left no negative feedback.
