Machiya is Japanese old Kyoto style house.
This hostel is in an old private house in Japan which is very narrow offering cosy, clean and affordable accommodation in a traditional old Japanese building, based in ‘Kanouya’, located in Nishijin, a residential and quiet area in Kyoto.
Anti urbanism style.


Only 10 beds.
The futon (bedding) uses silk. They are highest class.

We offer Internet & Wireless LAN throughout the property and have a communal kitchen and living room. We have a laundry service for a small fee and offer a bike rental facility.

Other facilities and services include a spot garden and soaps and driers.

Free tea and coffee is available in the kitchen and we prepare free bread for breakfast every day.

Smoking is forbidden in the hostel.

Accommodation Information

There are no mixed dorms. (boys can't stay in girls’ dorms)
Many guys have booked stays women’s dorms in the past. We can’t prepare the women’s bed for guys and will not facilitate your stay should you do the same.

3 - 5 people can stay in the Japanese-style room.
(If add more people on private room please book the Dormitory by same name. I will change the condition)

All our rooms are equipped with air-conditioning.

We also have 2 dormitory rooms (4 beds, separate rooms for male & female guests) and 1 private room (Japanese style 2-5 people) available.

We provide heated blankets during the winter.
There is a women-only policy in August (Dormitory).

Location Information

Senbon Demizu bus stop is a 3 minute walk away and JR Nijo Station (JR Sagano Line) is an 18 minute walk from the hostel. Some supermarkets and 24 hours convenience stores are located near by.

You can visit the Sento (traditional Japanese public bath) between 15:00 pm. - 0:00 am for JPY 410/person. It is very close to the hostel so please feel free to ask us for more information.

The train in Kyoto is not very convenient so we recommend using the bus which covers most of the city. A single on-way journey is 220 Yen so we recommend buying the 1 day city bus pass as it is more economical. It costs 500yen and it is available from the driver on the bus.
