We made a point of coming back to this hostel having been shown it 6 years aho when we last holidayed in Ireland using our Truimph Sprint motorbike. On that ocasion the hostel was full, so we moved on to Tralee and stayed in an IHH which is no longer part of the Group. (A former convent; it had a Pugin staircase and we showered in 'stalls' as used by the Nuns or the bording pupils!) Re Cloghane - superb standard of room; en-suite facility in a Hostel! Also great views from our room. Unfortunately our 1 night was a quiet one in the hostel, so the informal information exhange/'craic' didn't happen, but then we didn't cook that night. We walked out to the Brandon harbour once we'd unloaded the motorbike and cleaned up.' Had a drink in 2 good pubs and as it was now 19.30 decided to eat in the 2nd pub before 'road ' walking back to the hostel.( We had managed the walk out to the harbour by getting off the main road after 1/2 way and arriving at the harbour from the beach via the dunes and bridge across the river.) Very pleasant, great views, great contrasts in the light and NO RAIN! Our nightcap in the further pub was ordinary because all the other customers were like ourselves, middle-aged English. It is a disappointment, but inevitable that so many businesses in the tourist areas of Ireland are owned/run by other Europeans. Ireland is getting like Scottland; great landscape, but difficult to met any 'locals'. Just another aspect of Globalisation. The nostalgia trip is getting harder to find, but the new thriving Irish economy is fascinating to witness; having holidayed in Ireland in the 50's, when nothing had changed much over the previous 50 years; rural life was hard and all the youth had to migrate to get paid work.
