Liked: The location is superb being a stone's throw away from the lively Malioboro Street.

Disliked: The sink wasn't that clean and there were ants on the dressing table.

Disliked: in jogja most of the hostels don't have hot shower. They didn't specify on website, and the one with hot shower is more expensive

Liked: Location close to Jl Marlioboro street market. Tours can be arranged at the hotel.

Disliked: WiFi slow to useless often (internet cafe further down alley was good). Cold showers. Mud oozed up through broken tiles near handbasin, ants in room. Airport pick-up not always available (and taxi is cheaper).

Liked: Easy access to main road, Transjogja buses to Prambanan & Borobudur & Airport. Great foods & shopping places along Malioboro Road. Highly recommended.

Liked: We thought location was excellent! Walking distance to Jalan Malioboro, famous for souvenir shops and really cheap stuff; once can easily find transportation such as the Becak (sounds more like "Pejak") that can take you around Jogya, also, "andok" (horse carriage) and rented motorbikes; places of interest that are also walking distance are: Sultanate Palace, Bank of Indonesia, Batik Shops and Experience, Puppet Arts and Shows, Yogyakarta Museum and Library.Staff are very friendly and very helpful! It was a plus that the staff speak english. We loved the free breakfast on the 3rd floor where they also have free wi-fi!!! We liked that there's easy access to money exchange; booking tours especially to Borobudur and Prambahan Temples is easy because you tour packages are offered everywhere; nearby bars, restaurants, street foods, and convenient stores i.e. 711.If you are looking for hot showers, forget it! However, you would actually appreciate the cold running water of Merbabu Hostel because of the humid weather; we adored the coffee and the sandwich and the toasted bread with chocolate spread for breakfast; there's TV, AC, electric converters and free mini soaps.

Disliked: ok, the sink was too small to brush your teeth and wash your face; no wi-fi inside the room, you have to go to the 3rd floor to get access and at night, you absolutely need bug spray; don't expect for fluffy pillows, soft blankets or towels, and tempur-pedic beds.

Liked: The location for this hostel puts you right in the middle of things. It's far enough of Malioboro to be quiet, but close enough to be very convenient. Saving the money by going with a clean room, cold water and fan not hot water and AC, is worth it because there's so much to see you spend little time in the room.

Disliked: i never found the free breakfast (toast and coffee) in 3 mornings I was there. There really isn't anywhere to sit around and meet other travelers.

Liked: it was located in the main part of this area and was central.

Disliked: the cheap room literally had mold everywhere (mostly the ceiling) and should not have been rented out---it smelt disgusting. upon complaining they said they couldn't do anything even though it was clear that no one should be breathing in that room for long amounts of time. They even wouldn't offer a small discount. Nothing was told to me about the apparent restaurant on the roof or the free breakfast.

Disliked: We booked a room at the Merbabu as we were arriving in the evening after travelling from Probolinggo. We had paid a deposit and received confirmation for our stay. However when we arrived they couldn't find our booking and all the rooms were full. The reception staff was extremely slow and seemed to find the situation funny. He spent a long time on the internet and phone and eventually found our booking but simply said they hadn't written it down so they had no rooms. He wasn't apologetic and didn't give me back my deposit. We were left walking around at midnight with our backpacks for nearly an hour as it was peak season and at that time most places were already full.

Liked: Central location, close to the train station. Plenty of budget restaurants close by and only a short stroll to Marliboro Street. The free wifi made this a great place to stay also. We were on the third floor so we could use this from our room. People on other floors had to come up to the roof area.

Liked: Walking distance to Tugu Train Station, Venderburg, Kraton Complex, Old Quarter, Taman Sari (water castle, which has nothing much left to see), Tugu Pahlawan, Ramayana & Matahari (shopping malls) and the ever famous Malioboro Street - place for shopping and checking on tours. There is a nice roof top restaurant where you can get a free wifi and free breakfast. Room is clean, cool (ground floor at the back portion, no need A/C) and quiet..

Liked: The manager is very friendly and helps you with literally everything you need. The hotel is close to the train station, but walk to the Sultan Palace takes a while.I stayed in the basic room with no a/c and cold water only, however the value for money was ok.

Liked: Merbabu would be a great place to stay if it can deal with the problem of insects such as ant/spider. A reasonable-priced hostel with good location and close to some travel agents providing trip to borobudur and prambanan. helpful staff. clean toilet. free wifi but had to get to the roof cafe to enjoy it, not available in room a bit sad. hope it can deal with the insect problem (esp. bed) to make a great hostel for travellers.

Liked: We booked a airport transfer for the next morning. At night when we came home and asked the staff, wether everything is fix, he told us that there is no airport shuttle available from the hostel...after searching a taxi in the raining morning the airpot shuttle arrived 10 min later, however nobody told us and the whole lugagge was wet!!Moreover we booked three rooms and there were only two available, but the stuff provide us an extra bed (which was quite expensive)....In total a nice hostel but incompetent stuff.
