Liked: This a sociable guesthouse with nice common areas, it's a good pace to meet other travellers. The staff are friendly and helpful, they let me use the phone for free to call around hostels in Calcutta.

Disliked: Nothing - although I would recomend that you get the pick up from the train station / airport otherwise is may be very difficult to find.

Liked: the guest house is clean and beautifully decorated in Indian style. our room was overlooking the Ganges across the gatts and across the river. The staff were very helpful at all times and the roof top restaurant offersa wide selection of drinks, snacks and main meals at a very competative price. The views from the rooftop are stunning and we would have no hesitation in recommending the Ganpati to anyone. It offers good value for money and a safe calm haven in the madness that is India!

Disliked: The only negative was that the wifi connection didn`t work and the electricity supply was likely to go off without warning. However this seemed to be common to the rest of the places we stayed at in India.

Liked: The Ganpati was an oasis of calm in the heart of the crazyness that is Varanasi. I loved the arabic style courtyard and that i could watch the sunrise over the Ganges from my bed. The room was really nicely decorated and clean and the showers were always hot. The free wifi was a bonus too. The restaurant on the roof is nice and the food is ok, though they do get a lot of beatles and bugs up there in the evening, so you may want to grab one of the tables inside. The other good thing about Ganpati is that they run their own boat trips, which cost 100 rupees when i was there. 100 rupees is a really good price and paying for the trip through the hotel saves you having to negotiate with the normal boaters. They are also very secure - there was a guard ont he front door (well, a nice old man) and they had CCTV.

Disliked: The hostel can be a little hard to find, but that's beacuse it's in the heart of the old city.

Liked: The location was great, central to the two main ghats and on the banks of the ganges. Room was clean and comfortable. The roof top restaurant was nice and the food was tasty. The pick up from train station is recomended as we would never have found it otherwise!

Disliked: Only 2 toilets and showers for the whole hostel. We were 'assigned' a tourist guide at the train pick-up, helpful but expensive! We got mislead regarding the boat trip price in hotel brouchure, had to pay three times the price that was in the brouchure!! The reception staff weren't that friendly or helpful.

Liked: Facilities are brilliant and the rooms are really nice. The location is excellent, in the old city, right next to the Ganges. The food served on the rooftop cafe was really good too.

Disliked: nothing, but do be aware that near the hostel there are locals acting as 'guides' who will try and scam you.

Liked: Ganpati Guest House is located in the heart of the beautiful city of Varanasi with a wonderful view over the River Ganges. After a stay almost terrifying in New Delhi, this Guest House was everything that me and my friends needed to cheer us up. We had free transfer from railway station to the guest house, which I strongly recommend (you pay to the rickshaw and they give you the money back at the guest house). It's not easy to find the guest house in the alleys of the bazaar for the first time! The boy who was waiting for us, Pankaj, was also our guide through the city. With some nice skills and friendliness he made our stay very pleasant and left us with the desire to return. About the hostel itself is decorated in Hindu style. As it is located along the river Ganges the view is simply fantastic. The rooms that overlook the river does not have private bathrooms, but the shared bathroom is very clean. I was housed in a room with private bathroom, TV and air conditioning. The guest house has a restaurant, the food is very good, it takes a while to be served, but this is due to the fact that it is all freshly cooked the only drawback, at least for me, is that they only have vegetarian food. The staff is very friendly and are always willing to help us with anything we may need. The guest house has some tours the disposal at very reasonable prices. It also has internet, you pay at the moment and laundry service. Overall the atmosphere is very cozy and everyone from the staff, the guesthouse owner, neighbors and travelers are all very friendly. I strongly recommend the passage by the guesthouse for those who go to Varanasi and enjoy your stay as much as I did :)

Liked: Nice courtyard and good view of the river.

Disliked: Impossible to find and they refused to pick us up from the train station because we were only staying one night unless we paid 300 rupees. We got a taxi for 75. Anyway, you have to walk from about 1km away through an impossibly complicated series of allyways - it took us about 1 hour to find (we were carrying our bags and it was very hot). It was very expensive for what is was.

Liked: Great location, lovely big clean rooms and nice chilled-out atmosphere. The view from the rooftop restaurants of the main ghat was great and there was lots of communal space to sit around and read.

Disliked: Some of the staff were lovely, but some of them were quite rude and seemed paranoid that guests weren't paying for all the food / services they'd had / used. Shame really cos it was a lovely guesthouse otherwise.

Liked: The location for Ganpati was brilliant, and really easy to find when walking along the river front. The private balcony room was worth the upgrade too giving more living space outside and a great view.

Disliked: The way the rooms are set up for electricty is quite frustrating, there is an electricity board in the room as well as the items switches - was a little annoying trying to work out how to get a light on/off, or the aircon on.

Disliked: It was quite difficult to find, down lots and lots of backlanes, also if you choose shared bathroom be prepared there is only two for the whole hostel and it was quite far from the room. At night it was a little on the noisy side, from outside.
