Backwater Heritage is a traditional Keralan home stay where you can relax in its beautiful garden with steps to the river bank. The rivers surrounding the house were the backdrop for Arundathi Roy's novel, 'God of Small Things'. As well as the traditional Keralan food to enjoy, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, fishing, boating and canoeing. Each of the large rooms have their own bathrooms and are in a separate building allowing for privacy. Wi-Fi. Read more

About Back Water Heritage Homestay - Kumarakom

The 100 year old building with many teak and rosewood features has a beautiful garden overlooking the river that has several chairs, swings and hammocks to while away the day. Those who are feeling more energetic can venture out on the labrynth of rivers and go swimming, canoeing and even have a go fishing as well as spotting the local wildlife including kingfishers, woodpeckers and cuckoos. There is also a 400 year old snake boat which still takes centrepiece in the annual snake boat races to see that Xavier looks after!

Xavier and his wife Lovely welcome all their guests with Keralan hospitality including of course a welcoming glass of coconut water! Lovely makes traditional food for vegetarians and non-vegetarians and is more than willing to adapt the level of spiciness. Breakfast is included in the daily rate and other meals are provided at just INR200 per head.

Location Information

Although Back Water Heritage is only 8 kms from Kottayam, it feels like a million miles away! You won't hear any engines of houseboats or the honking of horns around here. Instead the local community lives off the river and the local rice fields, allowing you to experience the authentic back water village life.

We are however only 3kms by riverways to Kumarakom, where you can cruise on the Vembanad lake and larger rivers on boats as well as visiting the Kumarakom bird sanctuary.
