Liked: The location is superb since its entrance is right on the doorstep of the famous Nathan Street and it is very convenient to go anywhere with so many MTRs nearby. Transportation from the airport and back by Bus is also very handy right there on the street and very reasonable price too. Maple Leaf has given very clear and exact directions how to get there by Bus. One rubs shoulders with all the expensive and classy hotels on this road but what I love most about this hotel's location is that it is just a stone's throw away from Victoria Harbour where you can stroll to at night to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the Symphony of Lights every night at 8.00 pm. Very colourful lights at night. Day or night, you can take a stroll along the Victoria Harbour and enjoy watching the luxurious cruise lines that sail by or the Chinese junks that throttle by. The Avenue of Stars is right there at your finger tips too, so to speak. It is the Hong Kong version of Hollywood. The TGIF Restaurant is just a few stores down the block on the left as you exit the Chungking Mansions and this is just great for me as I have missed the TGIF ever since leaving the U.S. This hostel is very clean and this will always get kudos from me. The floor is mopped every day; towels are changed every day but to get your sheets changed you need to tell them if you spend more than a few nights and we did actually extend our stay due to unforseen circumstances.

Disliked: Although the property has excellent location, the entrance and the ground floor can be a nightmare when one has not been prepared for this kind of atmosphere. It is like the slums and streets of Calcutta. It is like entering the chaotic streets of India. Vendors will "accost" you and it can be frightening but, then, after a while you get used to it. They are just trying to make money or do business. The hostel is decent and clean but to get there one has to tolerate slum area environment on the ground floor before you finally get to the hostel. The lifts are very tiny and it is always crowded and overloaded. Lots of Indian men push their cartloads of restaurant heavy groceries and surplus bulky loads into the lifts and the lifts are always bursting and stretched to the limits. It's like CARGO that they are pushing into the lifts. There is surveilance camera, fortunately. One has to wait a long time to be squeezed amongst all kinds of riff raff in the lifts. Going up and down the lifts is another negative experience. If one can forget the nightmare of the lobby and ground floor, the hostel is a clean and decent place to stay in. However, for the room that we had, air conditioners from upper floors drip water down to our air conditioner and the incessant noise of the water is irritating and annoying when you can't sleep. The ceiling fan also makes endless ticking noise so if you are a light sleeper......you won't get your night's worth of sleep. I suppose the ceiling fan is not 100% perfect. This building consists of many businesses. The upper floors can be very noisy at times......like some people are trying to cook food for what they sell downstairs at the lobby. After all, the business people are staying in these floors too. But, for HK$360 a night, I suppose one cannot complain!

Liked: They managed to change my dates at a moment.Small but I enjoyed my stay,value for your money,basic and clean,aircon,tele,what more does a traveller want in Hong Kong. I shall want to stay again and ignor the touts outside. Cheap shops on the ground floor. Great

Liked: Room was very small but had everything we needed- toilet, shower, air cond., extremely clean. John was very helpful and I felt very secure. Chunking mansion is the best option for people who want to be in the very central place of HK - 5mins walk to metro [easy access to anywhere], 10mins to Star Ferry pier and promenade, walking distance to markets and shops in yau ma tei and mong kog. In my opinion Chunking is safe, much cleaner that I expected. Definitely recommend.

Liked: The place is very clean and spotless, helpfull staff, BUT, extremely small rooms.We booked a doubleroom, and thought it would be a normal size doubblebed.but instead it was a ridiculous small, and hard bed wich should be shared by 2 people. For two average size guys from Sweden, this wasnt very pleasent.Toilet also extremly small, when sitting on toilett you had to keep the door open, otherwise you wouldnt fit, and would be sitting in a very awkward position. We left one day before we planned to, because of lack of sleep due to to small, and uncomfortable bed.....wich was a bummer, since we otherwise liked the place and location.And by the way, wifi-internet didnt work in rooms as said it would do.J & S Gothenburg/Sweden

Liked: Although small compared to what we are used to it didn't really matter as we were out most of the day and it was fine for just sleeping in. Beds were high so we could stpore all our belongings underneath.

Liked: Although the room was very small compared to what we have been used to , it was spotlessly clean and serviced daily. In a way one doesn't need anything bigger as most of the day is spent outxide so for sleeping purposes it was perfectly adequate.
