Getting There by Air:
Guatemala City is served by a national carrier, as well as by other Airlines. Most daily direct service is from or via Miami, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, or San Salvador.
Our tip, by driving:
Check the route to your destination and be careful, count how many and see where the location of petrol stations are. The highways in the central and eastern highlands are narrow and tortuous.
At higher altitudes, you may run into a very dense fog. The Atlantic and the pacific highways could be dangerous because of heavy traffic and fast driving. When you are planning your trips, get help from the time and distance maps.
Getting There by Car:
Roads connect Guatemala with Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. From the U.S., the shortest route across Mexico, about 2,000 kilometers, follows the Gulf Coast to Acayucan, then across to the Pacific coast and along the lowland highway to the border crossing near Tapachula. The route from Belize is unpaved and may be seasonably unpassable for some vehicles. The highways to Honduras and El Salvador are paved and present no challenges.
Getting There by Bus:
Comfortable buses operate through Mexico with connections at the border to Guatemala City. There are several daily departures from the southern bus terminal in Mexico City. Daily services operate between Guatemala City and San Salvador.
Getting Around by Rail:
Service in large buses comparable to those used in the U.S. is limited to a few departures a day from Guatemala City to Quezaltenango, Puerto Barrios, the Mexican border, and El Salvador. Most service is on buses with rows of hard seats, similar to U.S. school buses. Departures to major towns are frequent, but buses are crowded and uncomfortable. However, buses are one of the more secure ways to get around Guatemala.
A rambling central bus terminal and market in Zone 4, Guatemala City, serves many destinations. Some departures are from individual company terminals, mostly in Zone 1.
Fares on ordinary buses are about two cents U.S. per kilometer, slightly higher on larger buses with padded seats.
