It was great to stay in the middle of the UNESCO world heritage site, with a beautiful atmosphere of the past. The staff was really nice, so I could even check in earlier than stated because there were not many other…

Overview

Welcome to Hostel Suomenlinna! We are a small, modern, cosy and newly renovated hostel in an ancient school building on the islands of Suomenlinna sea fortress, in a neighbourhood of 850 inhabitants and Unesco world heritage site. If you are looking for a more peaceful, idyllic and even exotic environment to stay than a normal hostel & city environment is, Hostel Suomenlinna and Suomenlinna islands are an excellent choice for you.

Hostel Suomenlinna is a friendly and laid back hostel with a charming archipelago nature around it. We have welcomed travellers from all around the world as a hostel, a youth camp centre and a meeting point for groups since 2002.
All our staff members speak several languages; Finnish, English, French, German and Swedish. We know Helsinki and Suomenlinna as our pockets; don't hesitate to ask us any kind of travel information. If we don't know the answer, we will Google it for you.
Hostel has three common areas; the dining hall with places for 40 people, the common room with comfy sofas and a table area in the upstairs hall next to the self catering kitchen corner. In the summer time it is cool to relax at our back yard area. Free Wi-Fi access is also available throughout the property.

We have good values in our every day work. By using the services of Hostel Suomenlinna you will support the Finnish and international youth work. Hostel Suomenlinna is run by the Finnish Youth Centre Association. The main purpose of the National Youth Centres is to support the work of teachers and trainers and to be of service to national and international youth activities.

We are members of the european youth card and consider youth by affordable youth prices for groups with over 5 members (age limit 29 years). A valid european youth card is required.

Accommodation Information

Hostel has all together seven rooms and 34 beds on two floors. Rooms are for 2-10 people.
There are three dorm types available (downstairs, 3 rooms) - 6 beds, 8 beds and 10 beds.
Hostel has two private room types available (upstairs, 4 rooms): twin and triple. Possibility for a single room. Extra beds available.
Dorm rooms come with solid bunk beds and a locker per bed. Rooms are spacious with high ceilings (4m). Twin and triple rooms come with single beds and have charming attic style ambiance. Toilets and showers (24h hot water) are in the corridor on both floors.
Bed sheets and linen are provided. Reading lights in all rooms. Heating system in all rooms for the winter time and double windows. No air-conditioning.

Hostel Suomenlinna is located on the north top of Iso Mustasaari, on one of the four islands of Suomenlinna. This 250-year-old fortress is situated 2km and 15 minutes ferry trip from the Market Square next to Helsinki City Hall and Presidential Palace, where the Helsinki Region Transport ferry leaves and arrives. Thanks to the regular, punctual and comfortable ferries, all of Helsinki's attractions are easily accessible. Our unique location means also that you can quickly change from the hectic city buzz to the Zen atmosphere of Suomenlinna. The ferry ride is worth of admiring the beautiful archipelago scenery and its part of the charm when staying at Suomenlinna both in the summer and in the winter.

Suomenlinna (called also Viapori, Sveaborg in Swedish) has been preserved intact because of its military use. In 1991 it was included in Unesco’s World Heritage List. Suomenlinna is not only a historical monument from the 18th century, but a lively neighbourhood of 850 inhabitants with i.e. an elementary school, kindergarten, guest boats' haven, art school, artists' studios, military school, recording studio, several restaurants, cafés and museums.
Hostel is right next to the grocery store, kiosk and post office, church and three of the islands eight restaurants and cafés. We can reserve you a guided tour on the island, lend you a torch the check the islands old spooky tunnels or reserve a sauna for your group.
