Liked: Very beautiful ancient building within York's walls, just 5 minutes from the train station and just 5 minutes from the city centre. Comfortable bed.

Disliked: Breakfast was good but bread was missing. The private bathroom was really small and fortunately we were only 4 people in the 10 beds dorm.

Liked: Very good location inside city walls and a short walk from the train station. Beautiful airy building. Dorms are big, have high ceilings, and a tiny bathroom. Good continental breakfast. Comfortable leather couches on the lounge and game room. Laundry room, computers, and a small kitchen are plus.

Disliked: The wifi is terrible: coverage is poor, speeds are slow, and access requires giving personal details. The bunk beds are flimsy and shake at the slightest movement. The hostel accepts large groups and has zero character, so it is not the best environment for solo travelers.

Liked: great location in the town centre. walking distance to everything in York but it is a small city. staff was very helpful and attentive to the guests. 8 bed room was spacious and clean. breakfast provided was good for a backpackers. fruit, cereal, breads, milk/coffee/tea. And the kitchen was adequate size for guests to cook as well. could see the fridge space being an issue in the summer time or peak season of backpackers

Disliked: it is right on the street so all noise from outside can be heard while I was in my room. i just bought earplugs though and slept much better the next 2 nights

Liked: Nice atmosphere and environment with sufficient facilities. It is very enjoying to stay in the hostel as the hostel match the historical city, York. The staff were so nice and sweet to customers,I have to give credits to them

Disliked: The basement has no or weak wifi. Thus, I needed to walk up to ground floor to get the connection so that I could make itinerary for my next day trip. This is a bit troublesome and annoying.

Liked: Very friendly staff and great location - the busing is full of history which is also fun! :-)

Disliked: No screens around beds in the dorm so not much in the way of privacy... Also try to avoid getting beds right next to the (tiny) ensuite in the mixed dorm!

Liked: Big enough for one to do as one likes - apart from the kitchen, which is maybe a little cosy for such a popular place.

Disliked: No shaver points. Kitchen was reserved for about 90 minutes for a single group. Since hostel travellers may be relying on being able to cook for themselves when they want, I feel the hostel's entry on HB should warn of that possibility.

Liked: The word hostel really doesn't do it justice. This place is more like Wayne Manor with bunk-beds. It's a fantastic building right in the city centre and delightfully close to the train station. The icing on the cake was the free breakfast: Fruit, cereal, tea, orange juice and all the croissants you handle! If only I wasn't quite so hung over :)

Disliked: I had to make my own bed on arrival. Is that usual? I have no idea.

Liked: Really friendly and helpful staff, brilliant. Spacious building with a couple of different communal rooms. Really useful location and surprisingly not noisy, considering the massive nightclub right next door (this should be mentioned on the website, by the way as it might bother some people)

Disliked: 1) At breakfast, the tea (and coffee) was so bad I couldn't drink it - it was genuinely the worst tea I have EVER drunk, and others said the same (including a staff member). It was 'liquid tea' from a machine. (And in Yorkshire too! What happened to the famous Yorkshire tea? That could be a feature, instead of a weakness.) For the price I paid, I expected a decent quality of breakfast, but it was worse than the stuff you buy from a poundshop. 2) The heating in the room was way too high and on constantly. People were like lobsters.

Liked: The ensuite bathroom and the free continental breakfast. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise as you get fruits and croissants and orange juice that actually tasted like orange juice! Also, very convenient location for sightseeing as it was close to both the railway station and the city centre of York where the attractions are located (that being said, York has a very small city centre).

Disliked: Dorm rooms were not very clean, with lots of dust and hair on the floor. The linen provided for the beds had hair on it too, so I'm not sure if it was actually washed? Free wifi could only be accessed near the reception area and it was very sporadic. It was as good as not having any wifi. Kitchen was rather small and basement lounge was rather dingy. If you don't mind bedsheets that aren't too clean, and a very poor wifi signal, then it's quite value-for-money i guess.

Liked: It was conveniently situated near both the York railway station and the city centre! The hostel itself felt like a museum filled with history, so it made it extra special that we could stay inside of it. It felt like a hostel with character. The beds were also very comfortable and clean, and the breakfast spread simple but very satisfying.

Disliked: The dining hall can be quite crowded during breakfast time, but it is not a big problem at all.
