This was a first hostel booking for me and fulfilled all my requirements.

pretty far from anything, nothing to do in village, room doors not locked,

It was quiet and the guy that was running the place was by himself and worked very hard. He did his best for info and the town it was in was small and fun. Beautiful countryside. But also very far away from the main anything and no buses on Sundays, and very infrequent the rest of the week.

It's really cheap if You compare with the others in the Lake District:)But Shap is not interesting village but it could be only step from lakes.

The very friendly staff and atmosphere, nothing seemed to much trouble and the directions I received for my trip to day were perfect.
