Two hours South of London, lying just off the centre of southern England, the Isle of Wight is known as the Garden Isle. It is a diamond shape, thirteen miles north to south and twenty three miles east to west.
Travelling to the Isle of Wight by car or by foot can be made via the car ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, Southampton to East Cowes or Lymington in the New Forest to Yarmouth. There is also a foot passenger ferry from Portsmouth to Ryde (FastCat) and from Southampton to Cowes (the Red Jet).
There are direct fast train links from London to Southampton and Portsmouth enabling you to complete the journey from London to Shanklin in as little as 2½ hours by public transport. Within its boundaries, the Isle of Wight contains a wide variety of landscapes from sheltered river valleys to wild, wind swept headlands, from long golden sandy beaches to forests, picturesque villages and market towns. It is truly England in miniature and perfect for a summer holiday, beach holiday or short break holiday. The Isle of Wight is blessed with a very favourable climate, being consistently warmer and sunnier than the English mainland, with sub-tropical plants growing in sheltered south facing gardens.
There is much to do on the Isle of Wight in all seasons and all weathers. If you are looking for that adrenaline rush there is surfing, sailing, paragliding, horse riding, quadbikes and rib rides in the Solent.
For those seeking quiet and relaxation there are many historic buildings and museums, secluded hillsides and beaches to explore.
For family holidays there are many attractions for the children from adventure parks to a dinosaur museum, you can even hunt for fossils yourself along the island's famous fossil coast or just relax on the sandy beaches or try your hand at water sports.
