This Ecuador beach hotel is run by Patrick Pecaut (a Swiss national who has lived in Ecuador for many years) and his family. It lies between Guayaquil and Manta close to the Machalilla National Park, on the beach by the village of Puerto Rico (15km to south of Puerto Lopez)
The Ecuador Hotel La Barquita offers you 11 comfortable rooms facing the sea, in different beach cabins. We also have 4 low-budget traveler rooms with private baths and hot water (hostel). Our guests can enjoy the covered terraces and relax in cozy hammocks.
You'll enjoy going to Isla de la Plata the mini Galapagos Island all year long, and get to almost touch the humpack Whale (from June to September), do some horseback riding, bird watching, snorkeling, fishing, etc.
For your entertainment we have a pool table, board games, satellite TV, a ping-pong table, a volleyball play field and of course; the beach and the jungle just a few steps away…
Our Ecuador coast restaurant offers a great choice of delicious menus even for the most exigent gourmet. Enjoy our local Ecuadorian cuisine that is prepared with fresh and natural ingredients without neglecting our tasty vegetarian and international meals.
Our bar will give you the chance to choose out of various creative and delicious drinks and cocktails while playing a game of pool, listening to music…or while watching a wonderful sunset, seated in the front deck of ‘The Barquita’.

Directions / How to find your hostel
From Guayaquil
By car:
Take the road to the coast in direction of Salinas. When you arrive to Santa Elena (a village before Salinas) follow the turn-off to Montañita (it’s signalized). The road will continue along the sea towards the north. The beautiful ride goes on until the village of Puerto Rico where you’ll see the sign “LA BARQUITA”. Approximated distance: 235km
By bus:
From the ‘Terminal Terrestre’ take the direct bus (of the company CLP) to Santa Elena, departure every 30 minutes. From there take a bus in direction of Puerto Lopez and ask the bus driver to stop at Puerto Rico (LA BARQUITA)
The journey is splendid, the road from Guayaquil to Santa Elena cuts through a Steppe of Ceibos, esthetically magnificent trees absolutely worth photographing. The rest of the distance from Santa Elena to the BARQUITA is along the shore, so on the left-hand side you will see the Pacific Ocean which practically baths the bus and on your right the incredible variety of the tropical vegetation. Admiring the wonders of the landscape, the time of the journey will fly by…
From Quito
By plane:
Take the plane of the company TAME (phone# 022 909 900) from Quito to Manta (Mondays to Saturdays 6:30am, Sundays 19:00pm). To Portoviejo (Mondays and Thursdays 16:30)
From Manta or Portoviejo take a taxi or the bus in the direction of Puerto Lopez and ask the driver to let you off in Puerto Rico (LA BARQUITA). Approximated distance: Quito-Puerto Lopez 635km /Manta-Puerto-Lopez 120km/ Puerto Lopez-Puerto Rico 15km.
By bus:
From the ‘Terminal Terrestre’ take the bus Quito-Manta. In Manta change to the bus that goes in direction of Puerto Lopez and let the bus driver stop at Puerto Rico (LA BARQUITA). Approximated distance: Quito-Puerto Lopez 635km / Puerto Lopez-Puerto Rico 15km.
