There are more things to do in and around Otavalo than just a quick visit to the market on Saturday. The surroundings are perfect for long or short walks, horseback trips or mountain bike tours for example to the nearby lakes of San Pablo, Mojanda or Cuicocha. A visit to the "Parque Cóndor" is worthwhile. It's a rescuing centre for local hunting birds like the Andean condor, eagles, owls and many more, the view is stunning and they have a flight show twice a day.
Otavalo is also a good base for visits to nearby towns and natural wonders, such as the local indigenous villages to see the weavers at work; the leather producing town of Cotacachi; the Cuicocha lake, the town of Cayambe with the snow-capped volcano with the same name; Ibarra and the Yahuarcocha lake; the hot springs of Chachimbiro or the subtropical and impressive valley of El Chota.
Our Hostal Doña Esther is located in the centre of Otavalo, very near to the famous Saturday Market. The hotel has 12 comfortable, rustic decorated rooms and 1 rooftop penthouse - all with private bathroom - all looking out on the lovely inner garden. Our local staff offers an excellent service and you will certainly feel at home.
Our well known restaurant Árbol de Montalvo offers a variety of good meats, fish and vegetarian dishes based on the Mediterranean kitchen, but often finished with an Ecuadorian touch. One of our specialities is the pizza, made in a wood burning oven.
We prepare our dishes with organic vegetables and use safe bottled water.
Please note that an Ecuadorian "Hostal" is not necessarily like a "hostel". Ours is more like a small family run hotel.
