About SierrAzul Cloud Forest Reserve
SierrAzul is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes, between 7.260 – 8.580 feet above the sea level. It is part of the biggest cloud forest in Ecuador and one of the best preserved forest.
With more than 2000 hect of extension, it gives refugee to all flora and fauna that this type of forest has on it! There are sittings of the Spectacled Bear and endangered species, as well as Pumas and other smaller mammals. Thanks to ornithologists who have visited SierrAzul, more than 250 bird species have been registered. This area is very important for migrant species. The Giant Antpitta, a species previously believed to be extinct was rediscovered in SierrAzul. These forests are considered as one of the richest zones in terms of biodiversity. Many epiphytes grow here, especially orchids and bromeliads. Among the most important species with medical purpose we find Cinchona, The Drago. Rubber was taken from this zone during World Word II, and for these reason, it’s known as the “Caucheras Zone”. Alders, Horsetail trees and many other more, are in these forests.

The excellent conservation of primary forest has been important for the stock of native species of flora and fauna. Big Rubber trees are in this forest, that’s why its called “Caucheras Zone”.
The Alder it’s also in this forests, this is a pioneer tree, which means that grows fast disturbed areas. It is used for reforestation. It can reach up to 15 meters in height. Alders grow in humid and cloudy environments. The wood is used for furniture.
Sangre de Drago tree, the sap is used as a disinfectant, it heals and cures ulcers. A few drops of sap dissclived in water heal, cures ulcers caused by tension, stress, alcoholism and malaise caused by hepatitis. The sap is also applied to cuts and other skin irritations, it helps wounds to heal rapidly.
The Cascarilla tree was used by natives from Ecuador for the effect that’s it has against Swamp Fever. The bark contains an alkaloid named Quinina, which is the active principle against Malaria.
The Aguacatillo, Guandera, Porotòn and many more trees are in this area, giving shelter and generating arboreal epiphytes such as ferns, orchids, bromeliads and others.
There exist more than 250 species of orchids, these from tiny little ones to huge nad fragrant ones.
The fauna that can be seen here is from big mammals to smaller ones, its not uncommon to observe the tracks and paths of Tapirs, Spectacled Bear, Pumas, White Tail deer’s, Otters of river and smaller Trigrillos.
But if there are mammals here, there are also more than 300 different species of birds which gives a great place for bird watching without necessarily being ornithologists. You will enjoy looking to all different birds flying close to you and the lodge.
