We are a private cloud forest Reserve. The goals of SierrAzul are to protect the cloud forest, to support scientific research and to promote ecotourism.
SierrAzul is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes, between 7.260 – 8.580 feet above the sea level. It is part of the biggest cloud forest in Ecuador and one of the best preserved forests.
With more than 2000 hector of extension, it gives refugee to all flora and fauna that this type of forest has on it! There are sittings of the Spectacled Bear and endangered species, as well as Pumas and other smaller mammals. Thanks to ornithologists who have visited SierrAzul, more than 250 bird species have been registered. This area is very important for migrant species. The Giant Antpitta, a species previously believed to be extinct was rediscovered in SierrAzul. These forests are considered as one of the richest zones in terms of biodiversity. Many epiphytes grow here, especially orchids and bromeliads. Among the most important species with medical purpose we find Cinchona, The Drago. Rubber was taken from this zone during World Word II, and for these reason, it’s known as the “Caucheras Zone”. Alders, Horsetail trees and many other more, are in these forests.
SierrAzul offers to all visitors educational and enjoyable activities for ecotourism. The activities that can be done are:
Bird Watching: Guided by local guides, Spanish taking or either other language by request of visitor. Ornithologist’s experts can also be your guides.
Trails: Guided or self guided ones deep into the primary forest. There are different trails from 1 hour up to 3 days hiking, with camping and top services during expeditions.
Horse Riding: Ways of revenue to the lodge
Decreases in Boats: Inflatable boats.
School of Kayak: Theory and practices in rivers. (By demand with an additional cost ).
Mountain Biking.
Or just relax in the comfort of our infrastructure. We have a library, game room with: pool, ping pong, darts, or some parlor games. The gastronomic service inside the lodge, with in Ecuadorian and International food. And a well conformed wine Chilean menu.
If, your permanency in SierrAzul has a scientific character and glides to realize studies with this character, we offer facilities for installation of laboratories and service of logistics besides the own (proper) services as inn.
Equally if your visit has an educational intention with groups of young men, women or children, we possess (rely on) the personnel adapted for Guiana, education and care of the students.
Weather Data
This area is classified as humid low mountain forest. For this reason SierrAzul is characterized by large biodiversity and high endemism.
SierrAzul and the INAMHI (Ecuadorian National Institute of Hydrology and Mines) installed a small meteorological station at Aragón camp, which provides data about temperature, precipitation, etc. So these help us to know the rainy season, which are between April and August.
Remember that evening temperatures combined with high humidity requires that you stay dry and warm with layered clothing.
