What our environment offers: Indigenous markets (Saquisili, Guantoaló) Climb to 4000 meter paramo viewpoints Hidden valley trails Flowers, bromeliads, humming birds Silence A myriad of small brooks and waterfalls Great views of the canyon 1 to 2 day hike to Quilotoa Crater Lake Volcanoes Horses to carry your luggage Italian run wood workshop Small shops only 25 meters from the hostel Day Hikes & Hikers Advice Free hiking maps for our guests Please note: To keep it as nice as it is, we do ask our visitors to behave in a respectful way.
In a small region you have the Paramo Highlands (4000 m,) Andean farmland (we are at 3000 m.) and the lower (and warmer) river bed of the Toachi (2600 m.) So you can experience three different climate zones within a few hours walking distance!
No more then 40 years ago there where no cars, and no roads in this region. A lot of people - mestizo or indigenous - have always farmed and lived here and all transport to the markets was made by donkey's horses or llama's. People not so fortunate to own such an animal carried it on their own back.
Nowadays there are some dirt roads, but there is hardly any traffic. The communities you pass when you hike around are close knit, but very welcoming to visitors. Old walking trails are still in use, you meet people wherever you go, and you can rent horses to carry your luggage. It's one of the few places in Ecuador where you can make hiking trips from one hostel to the other, what saves you the trouble of taking camping equipment.
In Llullu Llama we have a guide with free maps and descriptions of day hikes that our guests can use. They range from short to quite long and go in all four directions. Day hiking saves you the trouble of carrying luggage, organising transport and you see all the landscapes of the region in a nice and tranquil way. Whether you climb up to the paramo to see the cloud forest and the volcanoes, or go down to the river and see lemons and strawberries grow side by side at the Hacienda Estella, or go to the animal market in Guantualó, trails are great, nature is overwhelming and the views are spectacular.
We are very Environmentally friendly! Living in such a beautiful part of the world asks for respect and care. We do our best to be as environment friendly as possible, also because the town has no sewer system or garbage collection, and we don't want to dump our waste on the neighbours. And we try to let the community, our neighbours benefit from us being here! What we do:
- We have a composting toilet - In the toilet we have a greenhouse that is heated by a water filled bottle wall - We have our own waste water filter system - We burn paper waste, re-use organic waste and bring plastic to the dump. - We restore the house using local materials or waste materials. - We buy our produce locally as much as possible - We burn non-native Eucalyptus instead of local not replanted forest trees - We encourage visitors to buy their own lunch in the local shops - We encourage you to hire horses and guides locally - We grow some of our own vegetables in our ecological garden
IMPORTANT: Our prices do not include 12% tax.
