Disliked: To get back into the main town, you have to walk up a steep hill which is dark at night - not great if travelling alone.

Liked: This place is near the supermarket.

Disliked: This place is a dump. It is not a "backpackers" hostel, since there is actually no real place for backpackers to meet and hang out. It is more like a family pension with a bunch of dorm rooms in the basement. Ronnie, the hostel owner, and his family live and work at this hostel, making guests feel like they are living in their home. The living room is small and full of the family's laundry. Ronnie's three kids were running amok when I was there--loud and literally running around all over the hostel. I couldn't even hang out and have a coffee in the kitchen because Ronnie's wife was using the hostel kitchen to cook for her kids, who were at the table playing and chatting loudly. Ronnie was also not very helpful. He was quite rude, impatient, and gruff. What was worse was that he is the only one in his family with English-speaking skills. When I arrived at the hostel, he was away, and he had left his brother-in-law in charge. His brother-in-law didn't know English and was USELESS in providing travel assistance, since he clearly didn't know much about how tourism works in Monteverde. He couldn't show me how to get to the main hiking trail ("just take a taxi" was his advice) and had to call Ronnie for help...even though Ronnie was also quite impatient. I found this place extremely unpleasant in character and facilities. There are many other hostels in Monteverde of the same price but with much better facilities (e.g. better breakfast, balcony view, cleaner dorms) and closer to the heart of town.

Liked: The rooms were very clean and ours had a nice view (at least I think it did, there was a lot of cloud!). The family who run it are very friendly and happy to help out any way they can.

Disliked: Its the hostel and the family´s home in one, so there wasn´t really a communal area. Also, the children could be a bit noisy in the evenings which isn´t ideal if you have an early start.

Liked: An excellent hostel, with great accommodations, services, and breakfast. They are very helpful in booking tours and many pick you up right from the hostel. It's a wonderful, family run hostel.

Liked: Nice location - nice (but small) room and bathroom.

Disliked: There is no area around the hostel (like a yard or sth) to chill in. Also, the breakfast starts at 6:15, which is quite hard when one is taking a bus from Monteverde to San Jose at 6:30 (goes every morning at that time I think, so I guess many other travelers/backpackers will use that option in the future). We had that problem, but in the end the host decided to serve us breakfast around 6 o'clock (wasn't really happy about it though) and he was kind of late, so in the end we didn't manage to eat.

Disliked: It stank! Our room didn't have much in terms of a window, so it reeked (nothing dries easily in the cloud forest). We also had basically no room in our room, the beds were practically touching each other and

Liked: Ronnie, the owner, was so helpful when we needed to set up tours. He had a lot of information to offer us that we really found helpful. He even met us where the bus drops you off to bring us to the hostel. If you ever stay here or in this area, you HAVE to book a tour with Las Brisas horseback tour... it was amazing!

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: It was very close to town, and the private room we had was spacious and clean. Ronnie and his family were very helpful, and they breakfast was great! It was my favorite place that we stayed in Costa Rica, and was definitely the best for the money.

Disliked: There could have been more shelving in the bathroom, but that's about it!

Liked: We simply loved our stay at Sleepers in Monteverde! Ronny and his family are really lovely people, you feel welcome from the very first beginning!!The place is clean and offers everything a hostel should offer. We also would like to recommend the new Sleepers in La Fortuna. We thought about spending 2 days here but instead we spend 5. The place recently opened his doors and everything looks beautiful!! Besides that, the staff was the best we met in our 4 month trip so far. So when you are planning on going to Monteverde and La Fortuna, stay at both Sleepers Hostels, you will love it!!

Liked: very very helpful staff. they booked everything for us, at great prices. we never had to worry about anything. breakfast was free and delicious. internet service was fast, and they have night security which is awesome! it was only a 5 minute walk from all restaurants, and not on the busy street like other hostels. perfect! you should stay here!!!

Disliked: not sure if it was a neighbor, or a local religious group, but every morning at 5:30-6:30 a religious program was played. i'm a light sleeper and it woke me up because it was so loud. my friend is a heavy sleeper so she didn't hear anything. but if it does bother you, ask for a room on the first floor. we were on the bottom floor. if it really bothered me that much, i would have asked the staff to see if a person could have turned down the music, or had us change rooms.

Liked: We met people from all over the world here, and had a great time talking with them and doing different activities in the Santa Elena and Monteverda area with them. We also LOVED the breakfast every morning when we booked activities through Sleepers Hostel. The staff was friendly and accommodating and very pleasant. The rooms were very comfortable and the bathrooms were immaculate. We felt very safe while staying here, and it was in a great location as well--only 100 meters away from a huge supermarket and about 150 meters from the center of Santa Elena. We would recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in the Monteverde area!

Liked: Ronnie and his family were VERY nice and helpful in booking tours and getting travel information around CR. While the hostel was a little sketchy looking from the outside, inside we did feel safe and found our private room & bath clean. Our biggest complaint was how LOUD it was. Doors were slamming and people were yelling all night.
