Liked: Great location in Xingping next to the river. The pizza was all it was claimed to be and the staff friendly and helpful. On my last night, because the A/C unit in my room was 'noisy', they moved me to a double room en-suite at no extra charge. In China where customer service tends to be perfunctory at best, it made a refreshing change. Forget Guilin (too big), forget Yangshou (too many 'sheeple' tourists) and relax in Xingping at 'This Old Place'!

Disliked: My single room was adequate, but an electric kettle would have been useful AND there definitely needs to be a locker in the room, for security and to prevent your clothes from spilling all over the floor

Liked: Spacious lounge, wifi, maps and books, guitar, heated rooms, fast hot water for shower, close to some delicious local eatery by the corner. Top floor view - panorama of Xingping. It was raining in the winter for 2 nights, but inside it was always cosy. Hygge. Staff helpful, polite. Met nice people in the dorms (2 from Guangdong, Chaoshan)

Disliked: Since been in Guilin and Yangshuo with superb quality dorm beds that gave me zillions of zzz, the dorm bed here was slightly not up to my liking; the coversheet kept coming out of place (maybe too small), and was a harder sleep.

Liked: The hostel is locatet in the beautiful Li scenery. The little town of Xongping is not such a tourist trap as Yangshuo! Really recommend to stay there.

Liked: Was booked in for 2 nights and refuded me one night when I left after one night.

Disliked: This hostel is 40 minutes on the bus from Yangshuo. I booked the wrong dates and contacted them via email to correct my 2 night stay. I was told it was fine and when I arrived the person at reception had no idea about my arrival. I was given a key to a room that wasnt made up and full of mosquitos, when I asked about the room I was given another one and told to change the next day.

Liked: Awesome place. Didn't want to leave. Stayed extra nights. Amazing staff. Sorry but you can keep Yangshou; Xingping is where it's at!!!

Liked: The softest and most comfortable beds in any Chinese hostel we've come across! The view from room 402 (double bed, no balcony) was the best in the whole hostel - Li river view, beautiful.

Disliked: No roof bar - just a seating area, but no actual bar serving drinks. The seats are all hard wooden benches, and very comfy. The only food was the pizza, which was okay. No breakfast at the actual hostel, and their cafe down the street was not too great for breakfast either.

Liked: We liked the location, cleanliness, style and food of the hostel. The pizza at the hostel was really good, and the cafe a little further away had a really great breakfast. The river view rooms have a great view.

Disliked: The directions we got from the staff to go to different locations weren't great so we kept getting lost. Xingping is not as touristy and hence not well marked.

Liked: The cleanliness and location were good. The associated cafe nearby was very friendly and reasonable value.

Disliked: Some of the staff were a bit offhand.

Liked: Very clean, and the staff was really helpful. In general, though, the food at the café is a bit expensive and somewhat too western.

Disliked: Xingping has no direct transport. You have to go to Yangshuo first from GUilin, which is kind of annoying. It would be great to have more internet connections, or at least faster connections.

Liked: Nice pizza, cheap beer and good location.

Disliked: The room we had at the front of the hostel was noisy so we changed to a room on the side on the third floor. Myself and my partner noticed that we'd left our mobile phone in the previous room but when we checked the phone was gone. The cleaners were asked if they found it but said they didn't and it was left at that. Apart from the one lady who speaks great English and is very helpful and the young guy who doesn't speak good English but was still helpful, the rest didn't speak any English and all seem to stand behind the reception desk sorting out one thing together and they weren't very friendly. We didn't realise until our arrival that you can only get pizza to eat and drinks. You have to go to the near by cafe for breakfast and any thing else. This was a bit inconvenient. The hostel has potential especially as it's in a local in the middle of Xingping and right by the river but I'm not sure how it's got the top rating it has.

Liked: The sight of the rooftop towards the river was very good (20 RMB-note). The Pizza is delicious, especially the Viennese Pizza! The staff is friendly, helpfully and their English is good. The room was clean.

Disliked: The bathroom had a weird smell after a while.

Liked: The private room (90RMB) was spotless with great AC. The staff were absolutely great and gave us loads of good advice. Great location. Beautiful view from the roof. I wish we had stayed in Xingping the entire time we were in Guilin rather than Yangshuo - it's much quieter and the river views are better.

Disliked: We had to move from the 6 bed dorm which was damp (smelled bad). Nothing to do with the hostel but we ate at their sister cafe in town and it was overpriced and mediocre.

Liked: Nice hostel close to the river, Good balcony on the roof for relaxing and reading. Rooms and bed comfy, decent and clean showers with hot water. Friendly staff.

Liked: Staff was incredibly helpful. The sunset view from the rooftop was breathtaking in that postcard kind of way. I upgraded from the 8bed dorm to a 3 bed dorm and ended having the whole place to myself. The big dorm was a bit too musty and dark for my liking. The pizza was also super delicious. It was Short but definitely sweet!!!

Disliked: Just the 8bed dorm was a bit dark and basement like. Everything else was perfect
