The owners are very friendly and helpful, it's location is very handy (yet tucked away from the hoards of weekend tour groups) and, did I mention how friendly the owners were?

tong li is a charming , historic watertown.. you get a real glimpse into the lives of people living in the community, not just the touristy main street. our room overlooked the canal and had a red paper lanterns hanging outside the window. we. stayed in a room with double bed and private bathroom.(walkin shower/squat flush toilet ) owner was extremely kind and friendly despite the language barriers. bring a phrase book along ! fyi... we are in our 50's and this was our first hostel experience. a bit challenging to find from bus station, but if you call ahead they will meet you. there are many pedicabs or taxis with cell phones who can call and ask the owner for directions.

The hostel owner and his wife were extremely kind and helpful - to such an extent that one evening they spent an hour and a half searching for us in order to bring us an umbrella because it had started raining since we had gone out!

It is located in an old family house with only a few rooms, in pedestrian old Tongli, and the couple running it are really friendly. It is clean, has good beds and recent aircon and bathroom. The couple does not speak English. If you can have a Chinese speaker to call them, they will come by bike to meet you at the bus station or main tourist entrance. Otherwise, it is not too difficult to find. While exiting the bus station; turn right into the main road, 500 m, then right again into the tree-lined street opening with a stone archway (where taxis might drop you if you come by cab) and leading to the main tourist entrance / ticket office (second archway, 500 m from first one). After the gate, continue down the street, pass two bridges to arrive in the older part of Tongli (800 m?). Then turn left under an old city gate and follow the street then the small canal 600 m until you recognize the hostel on the left side of the canal, with its red lanterns and protruding first floor. Enjoy the relaxing place!
