Wonderfully close to the Great Wall, I'd been to a different part of the Great Wall before and didn't enjoy it. The part of the Great Wall that this hostel is close to is beautifully scenic, and not as busy as other parts of the wall so you can get some great pics. The hostel is in a pretty remote, but the staff are great and will help organise trips to hot springs and ensure you have an entertaining stay. Highly recommended.
The property is a classic hudong - family residence compound. It has been fixed up so as to provide hostel-style (primitive) bedrooms, some with very basic showers. it's not for the mainstream tourist. But it is interesting from a historical perspective.

Very friendly personnel, helpful. Nice furniture, mix of western and chinese. Not expensive for what you get. I will for sure book again this hotel when I visit Beijing.
Very friendly staff, level of English is okay, really nice atmosphere. For sure focused on guests from Western country`s, and it`s well done.

Close to hutongs and a lot of sights (forbidden city, the square, etc.) Subway was not too far. Staff was helpful arranging train tickets and with directions

The location was very good. It's a longish walk to the subway station and there were many restaurants around the area plus a 24-hour convenience store around the corner of the hutong. It's nice that it's in the midst of a hutong so you can really see people going about their daily lives. The staff was very friendly and helpful and they all speak English - BRUCE was particularly very helpful and every morning he went through my subway and bus routes with me. He even wrote my bus stops in Chinese so it will be easier for me to get directions if I get lost (but I never did, thanks to him!). Bruce rocks! :) There's a bakery right across the street when you get to the main road and many small and affordale restaurants when you turn left (facing the main street). There are also two banks a few meters to the left of the bakery across the street and a small takeaway stall where you can buy mini crusty custard pies for 2 yuan a piece.
The most friendly, helpful and good natured staff I have ever seen in a hostel. Things like shampoo and soap dispensers in the showers and free towels made the stay at an already comfortable hostel even more convenient and comfortable.

|Atmosphere -||93%||Staff -||95%||Facilities -||87%||Safety -||89%|

Red Lantern House was ideally situated within the communal HuTong area, not far from the main road, as well as not being too far from JiShuiTan station (line 2) and PingAnLi station (line 4 & 6). Staying in a dorm room close to the dining area, using the toilet and shower facilities were not so troublesome. Space within the dormitory room was adequate enough for four guests. The hostel itself is superbly decorated, well furnished and well kept, having character and charm, an ambience you don't expect when compared to the exterior. There were also several fish tanks, a mini bridge and their hostel mascot, their chilled cat. The hostel is well run and well organised, and didn't mind other guests who hadn't booked to stay over, providing they pay of course. Other services were laundry service, which is charged by the half kilo and well as serving up continental style breakfast in the morning hours. Internet was very good. Lend spare umbrellas if it rains. On Sundays they prepare steamed pork buns, which I was invited to help make and later given some for lunch. Very hospitable and was the cherry on the cake for my week long time in the capital.
So friendly, helpful, beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable, in a brilliant hutong location.

Lovely staff, we woke them up at 3am and they let us in, we are very sorry guys for the early wake. We waited in the reception area until the reception opened (our fault - didn't read description about reception hours, assumed 24 hours). Very helpful, although not necessarily 100% helpful, they really wanted to try and help and did all they could. Helped us book flights via ctrip. Cool to stay in a real Hutong rather than a sterile block of rooms :-)
The hostel is the perfect location to experience the traditional Chinese way of living. It is located in a Hutong, so that you get an insight into a traditional neighborhood, with its local shops and markets. Additionally, the Hostel has very friendly staff, which provides helpful tips and personal insights. They try to fulfill you every wish/request. Communication was quite easy as the staff either speaks fluent English or German. The hostel is furnished in a practical way and decorated with loving attention to detail. It is cleaned every day and they even tidy up your bedroom. A typical Chinese-style breakfast can be ordered to experience the local taste. For us as a student group, it was the perfect location as the Financial street is very close and the two metro stations within walking distance (~15 min --> quite close for Beijing Mega-City). Moreover, we had the whole hostel for our own. The roof terrace is a perfect spot to relax after a busy day. All in all, staying in this hostel was a great way to learn about the Chinese culture and its people. We were told several times during our stay that Beijing (Business + shopping district), Shanghai and Hong Kong is not China. But living in this hostel is where you can experience the REAL China!

At first it was a little tricky to find, but it's a great hostel and has everything you require. The wifi can play up if a lot of people are on and it's only usable near reception. The staff are more than helpful. They helped me with everything I needed and every question. They are very friendly, they have two common rooms and comfy beds!
Friendly staff Clean and safe/secure Services on offer (for example free copy service)

A small and friendly hostel fairly close to the centre. It's a low key but sociable place to stay while in Beijing.
This place has so much beauty and character. I didn't have much time to relax on this particular trip, but I could easily imagine spending hours outside in the courtyard on a fall afternoon, drinking tea under the guihua tree. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating of my rushed schedule (I had to leave very early in the morning to catch a train).
