Sow Peng Austayed at west yard, which is just few minutes walk from the nearest subway station Ping'anli (line 4), and whole lot of bus stations outside. It's situated just off the main street, but it could be quiet at night when the shops are closed. Found it inconvenient to look for a place for breakfast and dinner coz the restaurants nearby are quite expensive (for a solo and on budget backpacker like me) Found one 'within my budget' restaurant, which is about 10 - 15 minutes walk from red lantern (which could seem far when you're back in the evening, tired and exhausted), and ate my dinner there almost every night. Well, maybe it's just because i didn't explore enough of the nearby places. Otherwise the environment inside the hostel is great, where i sit at the lobby to write my diary almost every night. Only two computers to use, RMB 6 per hour. No lockers provided inside dorm room. And difficult to do laundry by ownself unless you wash it at the basin in the bathroom. Or pay a price (forgot how much) for laundry service. |

Pui Yee BettyI can feel the hutong's atmosphere around the area. The local life is the real taste in Beijing. If i visited BJ again, I definitely will stay here again, although I have to stand for the bed which I can feel the wired underneath. (P.S. No more shop "Queen Dairy" at the corner of the hutong, instead, it's the Japanese fast food shop now (Nov.4)!!! |

DAVID YAMADAFree wireless was a plus as well as big beers for 4Yuan. The location was fine with Metro and bus nearby. You can ride 22 bus from location to Forbidden City for 1 yuan. The subway is 2 Yuan and you must make a transfer. For those without laptops, there is a charge for using the computers. No free tea or coffee. But, there are plenty of places to eat nearby. |

Jai ChaddertonThe hostel is cleaned daily and the staff are so helpful and friendly, towels are obviously a precious commodity so don't use them as a bath mat or u'll incur the wrath of the cleaners. Overall bloody great place to stay......Close to 3 subway lines, Lama Temple and Bai Hai park. Great food every which direction and the charm of Hutong life at ur doorstep. If ur traveling alone I would recommend u stay in a dorm as all the private rooms w ensuite are in the same wing and as such tend to attract more couples and quieter evenings. |

Colin HunterThe Red Lantern House has amazing character with a really cute courtyard garden and very nice interior. The rooms are a good size and clean and the staff very helpful, often recomending nice restaurants in the area or interesting places to visit. We organized a trip to the great wall of china through the hostel and it was a wonderful experience. Food is very cheap and good quality, though there are tons of decent eateries in the area. The subway station is very close too. The only negative was that we stayed for eight days and during this time they didn't change the bedsheets. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice if they had done so. But all in all we would definitely recomend this hotel... |

Customer reviewcheap is probably the main advantage of the property. location is ok in the hutong area, but there are better deals around now. rooms are ok as well, clean, but basic. noise is unacceptable though with the rooms/terrace where people sit down just outside. if you're looking for that pub feeling til 2 in the morning in your bedroom, this is definetely the place to go for. |

Matthew ParksWhen we arrived, we were impressed by the beautifuly atmospheric main building and was not dissappointed when we booked into our room in the east yard (which is a bit of a walk fromt he main building). Our room was traditional, with furniture and the en-suite bathroom was clean with western toilet (which I was happy about). There was aircon and even a mosquito burner in room. Staff was extremely helpful and their english was good. We loved our stay. It is far to walk to the sites from here but the 22 bus just outside takes you to the forbidden palace etc and also to the summer palace. We never had to take a taxi. Will strongly recommend this hostel. PS. the small local restaurants in the sidestreets just to the side of the hostel is great value for money. |

Customer reviewWe stayed at Red Lantern House for five nights. We were shuffled around and ended up staying in four different rooms. Unfortunately for us, the room that was provided on the last night was a private (and more expensive) even though the bunks from which we were moved remained empty for that night. Just a warning to those who plan on paying by credit card - Take cash!!! The location was absolutely charming and full of character... even with the rooster crowing somewhere nearby in the morning. The lobby/meeting area was gorgeous and very relaxing. Overall the staff is friendly and speak English pretty well. There is a poster that had the bus numbers to get to different attractions and locations. That was very helpful!! Also, the directions given on this site on how to get to the hostel from the airport are spot-on and really easy to follow. Some things that are advertised, but just a bit off - Breakfast is not as cheap as advertised on here. It ends up costing about double the price. It was good, but you can get cheaper out on the street. -There ARE lockers in the dorms, but you either need to have your own lock, or purchase one. Rentals are not available. - The game room must be the lobby, or common area. it's a good sized area and has lots of seating |

Customer reviewNice common area, pretty quiet, though in the morning in the 8 bed dorm you can hear noises from the hutong outside. 10 minute walk to subway station and close to a shopping street with restaurants nearby. |
