Liked: It has a fantastic atmosphere and really nice and fun people swarming around all the time.

Disliked: Prices for certain drinks and meals were unreasonably high. True, if you stay for long enough you get your breakfast for free...

Liked: Very good location and clean. They change sheets every day. Even on the dorms.First time seen in hostels in China.

Disliked: When I tried to book my train ticket to Shanghai, the girl told me that no more first class tickets were available for my date. I went to the train station and I could get the tickets with no comission.

Liked: We stayed at the East Wing and thoroughly enjoyed the courtyard. We spent every evening chatting with new friends over a beer. The food was good too. The staff was friendly and helpful. Free breakfast was a bonus.Very quiet location but close to restaraunts, shopping and services. There is a market a little further into the hutong offering wares and produce. Three subway stations are close by.

Disliked: The bed was the hardest one we had during our 6 weeks in China. The bedding was very sparse.

Liked: Lovely courtyard, good food

Disliked: We booked our stay at Red Lantern House, but they moved us to their West Yard, which is a 10 minute walk from the original one. They didn't inform us in advance, so we didn't liked id. The Internet connection was terrible slow and most of the time not usable. There were 2 dogs strolling around and even marking the furniture...

Liked: I stayed in the West yard which has a lovely courtyard to sit and relax in. The food is pretty good here too. The staff were useful in booking trips and tickets etc but not particularly friendly. There's a metro station about 5-10mins walk away.

Disliked: The rooms feel a bit damp and mine smelled quite bad, a little mouldy. I got a chest infection while here and suspect it was from the conditions. The rooms look nice and are clean and cute but it must be the building itself that doesnt have enough ventilation.

Liked: We have been in the east courtyard which is really comfortable and quite! Nice to sit outside in the green garden. The mainbuilding is colourful and also nice but honestly the staff here was not so warmhearted as in the east courtyard. Speaking a bit Chinese helps to get in contact with the really helpful housekeepers. We choosed the red lantern to be in the Hutongs. Makes fun just to walk throught the small streets and to discover....

Disliked: Just two things: 1.our drain smelled horrible (bought drain cleaner and covered it with the bin) 2.the other guests were not to much contact seeking. Stayed first night there alone and started to chat. But mostly couples and families with grown up kids. Nothing for lonely travellers.

Liked: Still undoubtedly the best hostel in Beijing... I wouldn't stay anywhere else! Make sure you book well in advance - despite now having three separate hostels on the same street, in peak times they still get fully booked!

Disliked: It's quite expensive compared to other hostels in the area - my only complaint.

Liked: I stayed at the second location and the court yard was great. The food was decent and the staff was very helpful. There was a key card to get into the hostel, on top of a key to the room. The hostel was located on the same subway line as the Summer Palace and the Beijing Zoo, was two stops away from Beijing's Southern Bus Stop and 6 stops(one transfer) from the Forbidden City. Not sure how close it was to the night life as I was only there for a weekend and was more interested in sight seeing. Also, it is not as well known, but be sure to check out the 758 district. It is an amazing complex of galleries.

Liked: This hostel has a great atmosphere and indoor courtyard. We booked a double, but apparently they only have twins (we stayed in the main house).

Disliked: Location is not bad, but a little closer to the centre of town would have been nice - it's about 20 min on the bus, depending on traffic. Can be a little noisy, as all the rooms face onto the courtyard, so if people are up drinking you can hear them. Overall though we really liked and would recommend this hostel.

Liked: Stayed at both main section and east section - both very nice. Main section had dorm rooms and the atmosphere was very relaxing and enjoyable. A/C worked like gold

Disliked: The A/C in the first room was so-so (though this could have been due to my inability to understand the buttons). Went to the address, found out it was the West section and I needed to go to main section. Went there, which wasn't too far, then was told to go to the East section. Just keep in mind there are different locations

Liked: Good value for the money. Very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Disliked: We thought we were staying in the original red lantern but put in another one nearby. It does not have the same character as the original. However, the weather was very hot when we were in Beijing so the outdoor eating area was much cooler than being inside the original Red Lantern. Much more difficult to meet other travelers though.

Liked: This was a great and relaxing place to stay. Great atmosphere. The staff were helpful. The place was really clean. Great place to sit and relax if you need that too. Definitely recommended.
