For sea kayaking… a lot of discoveries! Here it’s a landmark for all kayakers. Easily accessible by our beach, the Gros-Cap’s coast offers a mix of red carved cliffs and caves. Also this side of the archipelago is well sheltered against main winds direction. We offer kayak gears and activities for all tastes!
Local people involved! That huge red rock called the « Gros-Cap » is the heart of the Canton in name of it. Since many generations, families spent their afternoon at the Gros-Cap’s beach to rest and for having fun! All around the place, depending of the season, many people are fishing mackerel, herring, lobsters, sparing while kayakers paddle along the cliffs… Because of abundant fishing activities in the area, fishermen incorporated a fishmonger’s shop not far from here.
The site of Parc the Gros-Cap has been the site of very intense researches in the middle of the past century. In 1952, the laboratory was built. Located at the end of the cape, a team of research workers were studying sea species for 15 years.
When the laboratory closed in 1969, the provincial government built up a campground with all services.
In 1995, people from all around the Gros-Cap’s canton got involved when they saw the campground “for sale”. They didn’t want that placeto go to any private promoter. So they made a financial campaign called « Fete du Canton » for the creation of a non- benefit organization called Corporation of Parc de Gros-Cap. Since then, this friendly event is comes back year after year and volunteers’ administrators lead the place.
In 2001, the laboratory was converted in an International youth hostel with Hostelling International. All guests can stay here: young travelers, young retired couples, families, member or non-member. The friendly staff is helpful and the sea ambiance is good to relax.
Have good vacations here!
