Liked: We had a couple of good nights when Brian, the owner, took us to see a local Samba school and also an interesting fair with food and music from Northern Brazil. Brian is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Brazilian culture and this counteracted somewhat other very negative aspects of the place. The city tour organised by the Other Side was good value, even if the guide sometimes used some artistic license on certain details. The hostel is also very cheap.

Disliked: Where to start... even though the instructions on the website suggest finding the place was easy, it is not, and unless you already know what the 'world famous' sambodromo looks like before you arrive, there are no signs to indicate that you have arrived. Hint for future travelers: it's the massive concrete structure that looks a bit like an industrial estate/football stadium. The area also isn't the best area to be walking around lost in with all of your worldly possessions...On arrival we were greeted by a member of staff who it soon became apparent was a raging alcoholic whose main purpose seemed to be to sleaze on the girls and try and get people drunk. We often felt under pressure to go out with staff and do their organised activities (although admittedly we enjoyed the things we ended up doing with them). As for the physical state of the building, here's a summary of all the things we found unacceptable:- Only one bathroom, which was filthy and often occupied- Dirty kitchen covered in flies- Faeces seeping up through a drain in the little patio area leading up to the "bar"- Not enough lockers for all the beds in our dormOverall this has the potential to be a great hostel and we liked seeing things in Rio that we might not have discovered by ourselves, but the disgusting state of the place made it more of a negative experience than a positive one. Seriously guys, get a cleaner!!

Liked: Very nice guys, cool place... staff goes out of way to help, offer to take you places which is cool instead of tours. The hostel is small and cozy, has everything you need and like I went for the price, good deal. Will stay a little while longer and probably come back at the end of my trip.

Disliked: Nothing man, its a good hostel, they know what they are doing.
