Liked: Alex is the man! He makes sure you feel right at home the second you walk in. He goes out of his way to help you out. A perfect ambassador for the country. This place is run simply and very well. Its tucked away up a hill and is a great jumping off point to anywhere you want in Rio. Great place to meet people to go out on the town with.

Disliked: There is a squeaky door. And the doorbell can present a challenge to reach for someone with their hands full.

Liked: Close to Lapa district which is great for carnival.

Disliked: Advertised facilities did not exist. When the owner Alex was there he was exceptional however not there majority of the time. He did get us cheap carnivale tickets and explained he was "renovating" but it was quite bad. We stayed in one of the two upstairs bedrooms which we paid extra for thinking it would be better. Bad mistake. Perhaps the hostel downstairs might have been better. We had to put books under one side of the bed to make it level. The room was not clean and we had to wear flip flops or get dirty feet. Had to use cushions from the couch as pillows and the owners guests used paying guests facilities. Location was a major problem as although close to Lapa district many taxi's would not go to Pousada as it was uphill & a little out of the way. One couple staying there was put out of taxi at the bottom of hill with their luggage. Of all the budget backpackers we have stayed all over the world, this would have to be the worst.

Liked: relatively close to lapa

Disliked: Advertised facilities did not exist. There were no staff members on hand the majority of the time. When they were they were unable to complete a simple request like book a taxi. Breakfast was almost inedible. Rooms were exceptionally hot even for rio. The water did not work in the room on 1 occasion.

Liked: The property was set just outside the Central area of Rio, in Santa Teresa, away from the more toristic areas, gave us a much better feel/experience of local like

Liked: alex was a great host, laid-back but attentive, friendly and informative the rooms upstairs (double beds) are nicer, wooden floors, high ceilings, independent but private bathrooms, theres a kitchen area and a mini fride outside the room for keeping water cool. its a perfect place for independent backpackers, who are looking for a place to call home for a few days, its not the greatest place for meeting people unless the dorm rooms downstairs are full. if you're nice to alex, he may offer to wash your clothes...

Disliked: alex still has some work to do on the downstairs rooms, as he is doing the place up on his own, but its a great spot in a great bairro.

Liked: This house is simply beautiful and getting better all the time as the owner has more plans for lower floors. The room was clean, bright and comfortable and breakfast was delicious. Access to a fridge, the kitchen and a personal fridge were all unexpected bonus' . It is on a steep hill, but only about 15 minutes walk from the Centre of Rio; ideal for getting the metro and exploring elsewhere.Highly recommended.

Liked: Staff we're amazing, would do anything possible to make you feel at home and answer any queries. Very clean and relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely would stay there again!!!

Liked: Owner Alex was so helpful and nice. He helped us to get us cheap tickets for the carnival in Rio, and even drove us to the Sambodromo. Also gave us good suggestions on where to go in Rio. The hostel doesn't have internet, but he lent us his private "USB internet stick". Thank you Alex for making the carnival so great!!!

Liked: Owner was friendly and always willing to help. Facilities \ services were fairly basic, but it was very cheap so if you want something fancier then pay more. Was close to Lapa, easy to get a bus to Copacabana (though its the other side of the city).
