Liked: Casa Carioka is quite a paradise in the middle of Copacabana. Not so close to the beach (but in a very-walking distance) makes it really quiet and gives nice awakening in front of the garden. Always perfectly clean and calm. The GreenBook of Allegra has any data of Rio you would need... and there are several activities she could arrange for you.

Disliked: Pity they don't serve amazing brazilian breakfast! The house is set just at the end of a very steep road... climbing it could get you breathless... but your body will work out!

Liked: Our spacious room

Disliked: The way we were spoken to by the owner Allegra. We left there after our initial stay because of the way she spoke to us and made us feel uneasy. We are now actually still in Rio but found a muchfriendlier and nicer place to stay. We did not feel welcome and felt that she had a very fake attitude.

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at this hostel. Alegra is a sweetheart as is her husband Julio. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Alegra and her staff are on hand to help with anything you need during your stay. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking your own meals, or you can walk down the hill to many restaurants as well as shops. The beach is just a few blocks away. I did not mind the hill AT ALL, in fact, it's great exercise for those of us getting ready for bikini season in Brazil. :-) Honestly though, unless you are a heavy smoker or very out of shape, it is not what people make it out to be. We are returning to Rio in a couple days and will be staying at this hostel again!

Liked: Really relaxed vibe. Perfect place to chill out after a busy day in Rio. Found the staff very helpful and knowledgeable of the city. No need to visit a travel agent as they have every tour you can imagine on offer. Our room was really clean and spacious. There is a drink fridge that is really handy. Nice kitchen to use so you don't have to eat out every night which is a big saving. Bathroom cleaned all the time and they have fresh towels for you. Just a 5 min walk to the beach. The house in a really quiet area so you can sleep well at night.

Liked: Good location, good price, friendly owner who organized the airport transfer for us at a reasonable price.

Disliked: Room and bathroom ( which was 2 floors below our room) could have been substantially cleaner. No electricity plugpoint in room.

Liked: The owner is full on but very informative.

Disliked: This is not a hostel, it is a home that you just happen to be staying in, and not in a good way. The common area appears to be the owners living room, so when they are eating or studying you are made to feel that you are disturbing them or getting in their way if you want to spend time in there aswell. The husband is learning English, but his lessons are done in the middle of the common area so you can't relax or speak during them. There is a beagle that is completely untrained that runs freely around the whole hostel, the owner only succeeds on making it more hysterical. The hostel is located at the top of a VERY steep hill, and although the instructions given state that you should tell your taxi driver to take you to the top, they very rarely do.

Liked: Lovely owners (Australian/Brazilian), super helpful! Nice Hostel. Hostel in a good location in Copacabana, only minutes from main beach, although its up a really steep hill. We didnt mind the hill as its location was fairly good, but others may. If your young & fairly fit its no drama.

Disliked: No TV, & breakie. Internet would cut out when it rained but not hostel fault

Liked: Really clean and quite. They have a nice big, clean kitchen. Our room was bright, big and airy. Exceptional value for money. Perfect location. Get a great nights sleep. The place is so quiet.

Liked: We loved this place. It's more like a private home then a guest house. The owners are really kind and helpful. Fantastic for couples. Quiet and clean. The beach is a few minutes walk away.

Liked: Nothing.

Disliked: The owner of the hostel is actually renting out some rooms in her apartment. We slept in a room with a double bed - and the only bathroom was two stories down - very inconvenient. But actually the worst part was the owners atitude : we arrived late at night and despite our resrvation we had to wait outside for half an hour until someone came to the door. Then, before saying anything else she insisted we pay! we asked if we could just put our very large bags in the room and then pay - but no! She has to have the money now. Then she said that checkout is at 11:00. This seems to be the most important message of the hostel because she kept on saying this. We met her a few times in the morning - every time - do you remember that check out is at 11:00?? Have no idea why she was so eager for us to leave, but it was really an uncomfortable situation.

Liked: Great place to stay for couples. I think it must be the best value for money in Rio. The room was big with a beautiful garden view. The shower was really hot and great pressure. The best shower I have had for a long time. Location is fantastic. Close to the beach, buses and shops. Cutest dog ever.

Liked: Tudo Foi Maravilhoso!!! Loved the location, 2 second walk from the beach. CLEAN CLEAN comfortable rooms, gorgeous garden view. Since it is located at the back of a street, it was quiet and peaceful. They were very helpful in finding our way around the city. Enjoyed everyone, very friendly and relaxing atmosphere. I loved my time here, its much cleaner than most hostels Ive stayed in. I would highly recommend!!!

Disliked: I would have to agree with others in that it is located on the top of a hill. The person who I traveled with wasnt into walking so much (OLDER LADY), so consequently they complained the entire time. If your young, or you dont mind walking, or your in shape, disregard this because it wont even be a problem. On the other hand, the hill is kind of steep so if your uncomfortable with walking you may want to reconsider. But for me it was nothing, thats just for the people who cant walk more than 10 minutes without being in pain.

Liked: The rooms are nice. Good location if you don't mind a hike up a fairly massive hill. The hostel was very quiet, great for couples (prossibly not great for solo travels).

Disliked: The shower wasn't great (I'm a bit confused by the other reviews). There is no reception and the staff are only around at random times. Checking out was a huge negotiation about what time we would be able to return our key, and leave our luggage. No breakfast (despite stating it on the hostel website).

Liked: The best HOT shower in south America, better than the one I have in my own home! Great value for money, comfortable bed, a good nights sleep, we'd definetly stay again!

Liked: This is such a great place to stay! It is exceptional value for money, the location is superb and it is quiet, safe and homely. Alegra the owner is helpful, warm and a great host!

Liked: This place is perfect if you want a quiet, clean place to stay. The rooms are huge and the view of the jungle is beautiful. The host is so helpful and the tours that they have are great. A really nice, well kept, clean kitchen to use. The shower upstairs was the best I have had in Latin America. Very hot water and great water pressure. This place is for couples, not a party place. They have a fridge downstairs with drinks for sale. You help yourself, and pay when you leave. This honesty system is rare in the world. I love that the women that runs the place trusts people. We enjoyed our stay and would highly reccomend it to any one who wants to wake up to the sound of birds singing. The beach is only a short walk and the supermarket is also close. There is a green book which the owner has made with all the information about Rio that tourists need. It was so helpful. She has really put a lot of thought into what tourists need.

Disliked: We were happy with everything.

Liked: We enjoyed the hot showers in the upstairs bath and the large room with a jungle view.

Disliked: It is located at the top of a very steep hill which isn't condusive to nipping back to the hostel for the jacket or beach towel you forgot. We felt that it was too quiet. The hostess wasn't around very often to answer questions, you had to write a note and wait for a response if you wanted anything. No hand soap or paper towels were provided in the bathroom. The house felt empty, lots of echo with any movement and was very loud between 6am-8am when people were getting up and showering, etc. You are basically renting a room in a private residence and feel like you have to be very quiet. If you want quiet and no interaction with other travelers or the host, this is the place for you.

Liked: There was a fridge that sold drinks and refreshments which were quite useful especially when you didn't want to walk down the huge hill to get some yourself.

Disliked: There was a horrible smell on the way to our room. In fact it was very off putting. From our room we could also hear the lady who ran the hostel and her husband. The bathroom was very far from the room. The lady said she had the best value for money rooms but in fact we found much better for much less in other areas of Rio.
