Liked: The coolest hostel if you are travelling alone!!!!!!

Liked: The location was good, close to both Ipanema and Copacabana beach.

Disliked: Because of the influx of a big crowd for new years eve (prices are much higher- 450RS for 4 nights per person), we hadn't expected good value for our money at this hostel. However, despite our experience with backpacking and filthy hostels,we could never have thought the place would be such a dissapointment. The entire place was extremely dirty, with a very bad smell and a lot of mould on the walls; cleanliness was non existent. It was packed with people; as we paid for a 16-bed dorm, there were at least 24 people in the poorly ventilated dorm, some of whom were sleeping on the floor. To make things even worse, I had to sleep in a wet bed the third night because the ceiling was leaking from the rain. About this, the night guard told me there was nothing he could do about it, and the next day, one of the owners told me just the same, while something should have happened a long time ago; shutting the place down and renovate it. As one of the owners had been helpful to our touristic questions (as where to take the bus etc), clearly he did not know how to handle complaints in a mature manner as he started to ignore us completely. All this made us leave one night prior to our scheduled departure date, with the sincere hope the place will be shut down for some serious renovating.

Liked: Very good atmosphere and excellent location

Disliked: evrybody smokes everywhere in the Hostel , and by law it is not allowed anymore , very dirty rooms and specially beds ( the mattresses should be thrown away , so filthy they were ) , uncomfortable broken beds . A complete renovation would be needed , but I heard that the Hostel was sold and will close down this year , which is a shame , as despite it all I still recommend this place . Let us hope they will open somewhere else in better conditions

Liked: The staff were friendly, and always willing to give advice. Location was brilliant great place to meet people who like to party, lots of activities planned.

Disliked: cleanliness kitchen was not well equipped

Liked: Brian the manager is a top guy and very helpful. Hostel is located in the best part of town - no other hostel comes close

Disliked: Even as an experienced traveler I did struggle a little with this place. I dont want to be nasty about it as people were nice but i would suggest that only the hardiest or budget traveler would be suited to Pirata.

Liked: The staff was very nice, very helpful and wanting the best for you. The location is awesome, 5 min. from Ipanema Beach and 5 min. from Copacabana, it doesnt get better when you are at a hostel, a shame they do not care more about the facilities.

Disliked: Although it was super cheap, and we knew it was going to be dirty it still surprised me how extremely dirty it actually was. The dorm smelled bad because of chemicals used against bed-bugs - nasty. So be well-prepared if you stay at this hostel.

Liked: lots Of friendly interesting people and a chill party atmosphere

Disliked: The bathrooms are pretty gross, and the beds are very basic. A few people got bedbug bites but not much more serious than mosquito bites. The facilities, especially the kitchen can get super crowded. Ask for a lot of info on activities advertised. Many are very good but some can be hit or miss and maybe not worth the cost.

Liked: Location and helpful staff. Ask them for advices about Rio before you go to the city, save the time and money.

Disliked: Very crowdy, looking very dirty at first glance. Pictures don't show the dormitories, full of stuff on the floor and hummacks. Cheap and great location.

Disliked: The incredible filth on the fridge, on the bathrooms, on the dorms, the bed bugs , and the fact that there is no breakfast.

Liked: Definitly the right place to go to meet people or to hang at the beach.

Disliked: Pretty basic place, nothing fancy, the rooms are kinda bare and the bathroom's, too. But they seem to want to attract a low-maintenance crowd.

Liked: the staff were really friendly and the location is good. thats about all there is to like!

Disliked: we didnt even make it one night in this place.... the price really does reflect what u pay for! if u can handle beds that have probably already been slept in, no covers and the constant smell of damp, then stay here!! we chaecked into a 8 bed dorm whitch turned out to be 4 bunk beds and 4 hamocks. one of the mattresses was an air bed... there is also alot of renovations goin on so quite noisy too. one of the rooms didnt even have a wall and just a flag in its place. There was also no glass in the windows of the room and really no privacy at all. if u can handle all this then do stay here because its the cheapest place in rio!

Liked: cool hammocks. probably the most laid back rules of any hostel I ever stayed in. it's more like a house with a bunch of young people in it.

Disliked: don't stay at this place if you are looking for privacy, its pretty jammed.
