Matthew CarringtonThis was the worst hostel experience we have ever had, and we've stayed in some miserable places around the world. We were greeted on arrival by loud music and a disinterested employee who showed us our room after he’d collected the fee for one night (not to mention we’d already put a deposit down online). We had booked a private 4 bed dorm but were led to a tiny hellhole with 6 dangerous-looking bunk beds which were later found to have been missing various slats to support the mattress (woke up with my head lower than my butt). It looked like a prison cell and we briefly considered committing some actual crimes if only to stay in a Brazilian jail cell that night because it certainly would have been more accommodating. It had no windows, just a large grate in the top corner which went through to the next room. (While getting ready for bed that night, the man in the top bunk of the next room continuously peeked through the grate into our room – incredibly unsettling.) The room had clearly not been cleaned for a while: There were multiple mosquito remains on the walls where people had killed the bugs and smeared around the bloody guts, there was mildew around the sink and in the corners of the room, and – not kidding – a pubic hair on the pillows. I didn’t take off my flip flops the entire time for fear that I might catch any number of diseases from the dingy tiles. The fan was so loud you couldn't hear someone speak from across the room and within 10 minutes of being in the room our legs were absolutely covered with mosquito bites. Needless to say, we spent the rest of our first afternoon in Rio de Janeiro looking for alternate accommodation. After finding several lovely hotels in a matter of blocks with available (cheaper, private) rooms, we hiked back to the godforsaken Misti to make our case to the staff and let them know we didn’t want to stay for the remainder of the reservation. When we made our complaints, they were less than friendly and didn't make any attempt to apologise or admit that the room was disgusting. They kept insisting that we had booked room for four with air conditioning (does a fan qualify as air-con?) and that’s what we had gotten, so there would be no refund. We refused to give them additional money and told them they would have an empty dorm the next morning. We were told that the loud music would turn off at 11pm, but it kept us awake until 1am, even though we'd asked them to at least turn the volume down at 11pm. There was no security, people could just wander in and out of the hostel as they pleased, and a lot of the people drinking in the entrance were clearly not guests. Bottom line: Run far, far away from this place and don’t look back. |

Katie MolzerThis hostel was not the worst one I have ever stayed at but it wasn´t great either. Part of the problem is they don´t have enough staff because you would ask a question or want to buy something or check in and you always had to wait. My view of the hostel was a little jaded because the pick up from the bus station was bad. We gave them all of the information but for what ever reason we had to wait 2 and a half hours for the person. When we got to the hostel we were given an apology but no explanation. I will say the breakfast is good and it is a really cheap hostel but if you are the last to arrive and get the top bunk of a triple bunk you might wonder how you will be able to get up there. I guess my conclusion is that there are other hostels out there that are more welcoming and this hostel should not be on the top of the list of places to go. |

Ralf WingenStaff really tried to help you (give you there own surfboard, call around to arrange things, help booking flights etc) and was honest about all info. The activities (beach football, boat rides, going out etc) were really fun and there was a big familiar atmosphere. |

Rachael DavidsonIt is quite a way away from the main bus station and is very remote which is really nice for relaxing, not so good if you want to party. The owner is awesome and smiley but does have the tendancy to disappear for stretches of time which can be quite annoying if you have left stuff in his safe (which is the only place you can put your valuables). Gorgeous location with pretty deserted beaches. |

Customer reviewHostel de Copacabana tiene condiciones muy aceptables, los baños podrian ser mas limpios. El hostel de Botafogo es bastante limpio, el staff bastante amigable en buena ubicación para ir al centro, atracciones cercanas y las playas. |

Matthew SladeIf you want party this is the hostel to go to!! During Carnival it Kicks off! As many people as possible are packed into this small hostel causing a cramped but electric atmosphere. The small ball in the evenings is buzzing with travellers, staff and some randoms creating a friendly party vibe often ending up with the staff leading a group out to a club in the earlyhours to kick off an all nite part. Despite the party atmosphere be aware rooms are cramped and very basic and during carnival beds are converted from 2 to 3 bunks, an extra level is literally nailed on top of the existing two! Bathroom faicilites are ok but it definatly rates lower on the scale as well. Lockers and cooking faicilities are available and staff are very friendly just be aware that some fo the tours available from the hostel are over priced specifically the Football which can be done at less than half the price if you can make your own way and get your own ticket. I would definatly rate the Boat tour available, stunning views of Rio in Sunset swimming and a good party as well. I would recomend this hostel to younger travellers who want to party and want a good location a short walk from Cocacabana, who dont mind a hostel thats alittle rough round the edges. |
