Samambaia Hostel

The Samambaia "Fern" Hostel is located inside an ecological park of 8.6 hectares of Atlantic Forest and Burle Marx Gardens. The "Samambaia Farm," an historical monument listed by IPHAN Colonial Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage. Near the City Centre of Petropolis (5 km), based on the principle of hosting students, teachers, environmentalists and researchers that may contribute to the Institute of Environmental Science and Ecoturism in their research and socio-cultural work.

Samambaia Farm was founded in 1741 and is located in an area of fauna and flora. Today the Samambaia Hostel is the only lodging in Petropolis within a colonial monument over 270 years old where is located the first chapel oficially registered at the Vatican.

Inside the farm visitors and guests are in touch with nature, native to the region and noble species extinction and can enjoy the beautiful gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx. In addition, famous as Evita Peron, Elizabeth Bishop, Getulio Vargas, Brigitte Bardot, John Wayne, Bob Hope, Assis Chateaubriand were guests of this beautiful place. The rooms remain in their original state.

The unique and only "Fazenda da Samambaia" a beautifull and preserved 18th-century mansion with a long tradition of wellcoming famous guests in history. From Princess Isabel and D. Pedro I to Evita Peron and Hollywood actors from the 50's. Each room is original with antique furniture and beautifull views from the the Fazenda's Natural Park disigned by the famous landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. Owners speak English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Dutch.

Location Information

The Samambaia Hostel is nestled about 800 meters (2,600 ft) above sea level, on the Serra dos Órgãos. 5 km from "The City of Pedro", Petrópolis it's the main winter destination of people from Rio de Janeiro; it offers a combination of good gastronomy, comfortable hotels, the proximity of the Serra dos Órgãos and important architectural heritage.
With a mild climate and mountains covered in the lush vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, Petrópolis became the Brazilian Imperial Family´s favorite summer resort, back in the 19th century. Emperor Dom Pedro I acquired a plot of land here to build a summer palace, and his son Pedro II founded Petrópolis in 1843. Petrópolis retained its glamour even after the proclamation of the Republic; inside the Palácio Quitandinha, for example, there was a large casino operating until the 1940s.
