Backpacker’s house is located northwest of the city center near the road to the airport. The plot has a natural character with three separate buildings, lime painted in natural tones. The main building, where guests will also be received, is the living room, kitchen and toilet. The two other buildings face each other across a small courtyard, which has a traditional decorated earth floor. These are the dormitory, bedrooms and bathroom. At the entrance is a small parking area under a large African willow (Mosetlha). In between the buildings is a fire pit under a canopy of Blue thorn trees (Moloto). There is also a cactus garden and a variety of succulents grow on the plot demonstrating a very low water demand landscape appropriate to our climate with several other indigenous trees and fruit trees around the yard. In warm weather this area will be the focus of social life as the trees provide shade and on cool evenings a fire can provide warmth.
Inside the kitchen and the living room a natural pillar (pinagare) from a leadwood tree holds up the exposed timber rafters and ceiling. The décor and finishes are natural with plain cupboards, shelves and furniture, environmentally friendly lime painted walls and an earth coloured screed floor. The kitchen has plenty of space and all the necessary cooking facilities. There is also a traditional wood burning stove to cook on and keep warm in winter. With the open plan arrangement people in the living room and kitchen can socialise while cooking.
The bedrooms are very simple as befits traditional sleeping quarters with lime painted walls, screed floors and ceilings made of a variety of natural materials. In the dormitory the beds are simple bunk beds. There is also one double bedroom and one twin bedroom. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and basin.
