Liked: The agency staff were very friendly and helpful but there was some confusion over my booking and what was on offer. i was upgraded to a solo room for free. The food in the hotel was good but somewhat overpriced and the room was comfortable.

Disliked: Staff had no idea of my arrival and after an early morning flight from Sri Lanka, this was very frustrating. Website advertises wifi and booking desk, both were not available. There were frequent power cuts also.

Disliked: Inconvenient location. I recommend to use the buses and pay a dollar, while receiving the surrender. It is very convenient, so that the conductor is very happy and grateful.

Liked: Perfectly fine place, if a little pricey for Bangladesh. There were no westerners staying here when i was here and judging by the fact that a couple of members of staff took pictures of me, presumably because of my skin and hair, I'd say they are a rarity. In my 4 days in Dhaka I have not seen a single white person, so it is perfect for immersing yourself in Bangladeshi life. Just stay somewhere closer to the centre if you can. But this is a good place if you can't.

Liked: Finding Bangladesh Travel Homes from the internet was a lucky stroke of fate for us, because for a backpacker finding affordable housing in Dhaka is quite a challenge. Also, nowhere else in Asia had we experienced so much helpfulness in one hostel. When we needed to change the booking they had no problem doing it and then, when we still arrived on the day we had already cancelled, they still bargained a good taxi price for us at 6 AM in the morning and welcomed us in their hostel. The rooms are clean; showers are hot; generator works when there’s no electricity; cable TV has channels for every taste; room service is more than helpful; the sheets and towels are super clean and food is good. The hostel itself is situated quite far from the sights and the old town, but there are plenty of rickshaws to take and the hostel staff is always willing to help you find a taxi. Also there is a shopping mall very close to the hostel and an internet café with good connections and a back up generator for when the power goes again. There’s even a little pizza place nearby for the ones craving comfort food. We, as many others before us, had heaps of prejudice about Bangladesh, but it all went up in smoke as soon as we crossed the border in Siliguri. Bangladesh people are so kind, so sweet, so nice and helpful. Even if they don’t speak English, they try to help you. Bangladesh is so much cleaner than India, the people are calmer and the food is better and less spicy. Tourists in Bangladesh are rare, so you are sure to feel like you are off the beaten track, well… all the time.If you book through Hostelbookers you are sure to meet Mr Milan, the man who has his heart set on getting tourists to come and see Bangladesh to drop all stereotypes you may have. He is also the one who will help you with everything you might think of asking or needing (he is even willing to help you with your visas). As we were only passing through we opted for the one day Dhaka city tour. Dhaka is huge and hot, so seeing it with a car with AC is the only humane option. The traffic is crazy, so a lot of time will be spent in traffic jams, but the times you really manage to see something are worth the effort. Mr Milan is more than happy to tailor-make the tour, so be informed and ask what you would like. Also, don’t be afraid to eat delicious local food (be careful with the ice though). And one more word of warning, if you manage to get the oh-so-handsome cricketer as your guide, it is quite likely that instead of Dhaka you will be looking at him all the time :)

William Rogers

23 March 2008 William would recommend this property

Liked: The manager could not be any nicer or obliging or efficient. To start with, I made a mistake abut the date and booked for February instead of March which of course mucked him around, waiting for me at the airport and not having me turn up. He emailed me to see what I was doing and rebooked for the March date. Then when I did arrive the airline ended up delivering me at 03.00 instead of the original time of 11'30 the previous day. Nevertheless, the car was waiting for me and everyone was very helpful and kind on my arrival. This lost me a day of sightseeing so Milan Azad arranged a half-day tour and came with me. He is very knowledgeable and has excellent English. He then helped with transport and accommodation bookings for travel to Cox's Bazar and St Martins and checked along the way to see if everything was going to plan. It was my lucky day when I booked Bangladesh Travel Homes and I knew nothing about them. You can feel confident about recommending them to anyone. William Rogers

Liked: The staff members were all very eager to assist me and discuss with me their opinions on where Bangladesh was on the current world stage, so I was glad to have chosen this facility. Although it was a bit far from the centre of the city, I feel that was a boon because it would have been quite noisy to stay down there, and additionally the restaurant in the hostel was quality and well-priced. I would certainly stay here again.

Disliked: Jonathan left no negative feedback.
