Liked: About property itself I can't say a lot good things. People that are staying in a hostel are really friendly. Position is really close to the city and main thing I liked was price. 20-22 dollars a day is a great price for a accomodation in sydney. Free coffee and tea was quite cool and free movies.

Disliked: I came with my cousain and she wanted to leave the second we entered. Room was dirty, smelly, without windows to open, and ''air condition'' they are advertising - I don't know what room they are cooling. Aldough, this was my first hostel i stayed in so I can't compare it with some else... We booked a 8 bed dorm and there was 14 or 16 beds in, like, 3 rooms but there was no doors between so i can't concider that as 3 rooms. specially coz i had to walk from 1st room to get to my bed. Hostel overall is really dirty and disgusting, even for me, a guy that was in army and was sleeping with 30 other guys in same room. When I saw my bed for the first time my thought was that sheet wasn't cleaned coz there was some hairs on it. One morning i saw huge cockroach, one somalian family would have enough food for a day from it. But, I heard that cockroaches are big problem on Balmain, so it's not just this hostels problem, and I don't mind them. Sofas in a livingrooms are in a pretty bad condition.

Liked: Go and stay in the Balmain Backpackers, its such a nice place with and great atmosphere. We extendend 4 times and enjoyed our stay there for almost 4 weeks. I recommand this hostel every backpacker who wants to stay at least 3 days in Sydney. You get all the time free Wifi , on sundays is a free BBQ and the Coke Vending machine is cheaper than woolworths :) Special thanks to the Kristy for beeing so friendly and helpful when we forgot to extend our stay in time and needed a bed. Awesome Hostel with awesome people. Go for it !

Liked: Free BBQ was nice. The layout is interesting, it feels like you are living in a student flat. Staff were helpful. Tumble dryer is free - good to kill off any bed bugs.

Disliked: It was dirty and the "cleaners" didn't do a great job. We were given 20 minutes notice to move out our room because somebody else was checking into that room. The 14 bed dorm (advertised as an 8 bed) was freezing and smelly/messy/very light in the morning due to lack of curtains or blinds. They can't advertise 2 kitchens as one of them only has 4 hobs which are temperamental. There is 1 oven and only 1 oven tray for the 80+ people staying in the hostel. No oven glove so you need to improvise using a tea towel! There aren't any scissors and only a few mugs and 2 or 3 bowls. The long-term residents smoke weed in the garage with some of the staff which is pretty minging. The rugs/covers on the beds aren't cleaned after somebody moves out of the bed.

Liked: cheap accomodation & people

Disliked: the location is awful, you actually need an weekly or monthly ticket for public transportation/ own car otherwise you can't get into the city ... no night activities, no bars/clubs around there very smelly rooms, but bathrooms were okay!

Liked: it is located in a very nice place, there is a very nice park next to the art college nearby and generally this part of sydney is very nice the stuff is very friendly and it is a very relaxed atmosphere

Liked: The staff and I believe the owner, were super friendly and helpful. They seemed genuine, interested and caring. The rates were VERY cheap, cheapest I've seen at any Hostel in Australia. The free, secured parking was an awesome feature I really enjoyed. Despite it's drawbacks I would recommend this hostel to friendly, easy going backpackers on tight budgets or those who can brave less than perfect atmospheres to save some cash.

Disliked: The free parking was tight, if you were parked in the two last spots you had to be in the hostel the whole time in case someone wanted to get their car out. The location is quite far from the CBD, but the staff is more than helpful with assisting to plan your route for you anywhere you need to go in Sydney via public transit, which is another expense. The Kitchen and living areas were commonly dirty, the staff did clean the area's late at night, but not very thoroughly and complained, loudly, about the mess they had to clean. The bathrooms were dirty and very run down, basic maintenance was definitely in need. One of the bathrooms doors did not lock so I had a fellow traveler walk in on me while in the shower. They stared for a minute, apologized and left then told others who then came to try the door, all in all, three people also "tested" the door which I found quite rude and quite strange. I was in a four share room near the living room / patio so it was very loud, not a great issue as I can sleep through it, but something of note for others. The electrical plugs were sparse, in a four share room there was only one, all four of us had to share.

Liked: A very relaxed, share-house sort of atmosphere. Free raisin bread for breakfast, free tea and coffee all day, friendly staff.

Disliked: Dorm rooms a little on the small side.

Liked: The people and staff were friendly and nice, the location was really good. Just a short bus to the city.

Disliked: There are cockroaches in the room and generally quite dirty. The people who tend to stay there are long term residents. the kitchen facilities were rancid, no crockery and dirty. The fridge looked and smelled like it hadnt been cleaned in years. The rooms were very cramped.

Disliked: The place was too far away from the city centre, for the money I saved on the room I may as well have stayed more central. Rooms were very unclean, bedrooms were like a teenagers bedroom and bathrooms werent cleaned reguarly enough for the amount of people using them. The hostel was not secure, no doors were locked and anyone could walk into any room. To get into the hotsel there was only one keypad to get in.

Liked: Nice and quite, yet just 10 min away from all the attractions of Sydney City. Many amenity shops and restaurants across the street. Great kitchen and common areas. They are thorough, efficient and friendly with great rates. Stayed for a week, spending the rest of the vacation there. The doors are well insulated, you get a good nights sleep even if other folks play music. This is your "backpacker heaven".

Disliked: Old building - should have been renovated. States "free breakfast", but almost no food in the "free food"-cupboards, and very little cutlery (at least in the kitchen I used).

Liked: very warm and friendly atmosphere. staff and long term residents were always willing to help with questions and places to go.

Disliked: it's starting to look a little old and run down. could do with a little interior makeover but you get what you pay for.

Liked: It´s a nice place to stay-sleep, although sometimes it´s a bit noisy in the night, thanks to other guests. The staff is very helpfull and friendly. The neighbourhood (Balmain) is very nice: many shops, cafe's and restaurants. It's easy to get a bus and go into the center of town.
