About The Old Mount Gambier Gaol
We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider.
We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison!
We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer!
The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.
In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience.
Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. We now offer affordable accommodation for all travelers and groups.
We have converted ex-prison cells into dorm rooms, twin rooms and doubles. For the squeamish at heart we do also provide rooms which were not used as cells, but were instead the warden’s offices. All of our bathroom and kitchen facilities are communal. We do offer some cells with en-suite toilets.
We have four styles of dorm rooms available – 3 beds, 4 beds, 6 beds and 10 beds.
Double rooms contain a double bed, twins contain one set of single bunk beds.
Both sides of our gaol have communal living areas and kitchens. We have two large outdoor courtyard areas for guests to relax or play in. We provide free wifi for our guests during their stay. We have ample free parking directly out the front.
We are happy to arrange free pick up or drop off for any of our guests to public transport depots within our business hours.
Please note all guests are required to arrive and check in before 9pm at night. Check out is at 10am.
You can expect friendly, helpful service during your stay here at the gaol. Pop into the office on arrival, locate your cell, grab a complimentary tea or coffee and have a self-guided tour of the gaol.
We are now also pleased to offer parking sites for camper vans. Prices are $12 per person per night and guests have full access to all facilities at The Old Mount Gambier Gaol.

We are located about five minutes walk from Mount Gambier's main street. Here you will find an array of restaurants, cafes and shops.
Right next door to the gaol are tennis courts and an outdoor aquatic centre.
Public transport is not fantastic, but most of our attractions are close by.
The famous Blue Lake is a ten minute walk from the gaol, the Cave Gardens are about seven minutes away.
Mount Gambier is nestled half way between Adelaide and Melbourne which makes it an ideal stop over for travellers wanting to experience natural and cultural beauty on their way through to The Great Ocean Road, Grampians and The Coonawarra Wine Region.
Mount Gambier is famous for its ‘Blue Lake’ and is surrounded by natural beauties including: volcanic craters, lakes and limestone and underground aquifers.
The city also boasts beautiful parks and gardens, caves and sinkholes.
