Liked: All "normal" hotels were booked out, so I gave the XBase Hostel a try. If you want to stay in St Kilda (beach), it´s a good location. However, it is a hostel with a bar at ground floor, so it´s packed, dirty and just a straightforward hostel. If you are for a hostel with a nice location and good nightlife, go for it. Note: It is not very noisy in the room due to the bar, you can not hear people partying downstairs. Easy to meet people.

Disliked: Booked the single room ensuite. Ok, it is a hostel, but room is VERY small. Just a bed, no table, no chairs, not very clean (however bead and bathroom were ok). Very small, looks like a quarantine station. Well, ok, it´s a Hostel. However, the single room is far overpriced (other hotels grant much more value for the money of the single room) Nightlife is ok as there is a bar on ground floor. Also other bars around.

Liked: Very friendly atmosphere and easy to meet people. Spacious rooms, I stayed in an 8 bed dorm and had a private bathroom, loved the huge lockers under the bed.

Disliked: Having to pay for wifi

Liked: The staff were really friendly, helpful and welcoming and so were some of the other guests. The property is close to public transport into the city and there are quite a few activities you can do locally. They have security at the door every night to keep the rabble out. The best cake shops in Melbourne are located on Acland Street just around the corner. There is a 15-20km walk / bike track along the foreshore that you can easily access which is fanstastic and BASE has a couple of bikes you can hire for the day for a good price. The breakfast was really good value for $5 all you can eat and some of the nightly communal meals were also quite good. The Bingo and Quiz shows are a lot of fun. Overall, this is a pretty well run establishment.

Disliked: There was a problem with the plumbing in the kitchen which was a temp issue but I could only suggest that it was caused by the amount of food people were dumping in the sinks. Despite signs and warnings in the kitchen they really almost need a staff member to supervise the area during the lunch and dinner periods as some visitors were very slothful, didn't clean up after themselves properly and it spoilt things for everyone else. The overnight cleaners had a really difficult job to do because of this. Also, the lack of cups and glasses is understandable given the issue described above but they should have some available to rent on deposit as a cup of tea or hot chocolate at the end of the day is almost a necessity!

Liked: Its location is great.. very close to St Kilda Beach.

Disliked: No close parking, room was not overly clean, the floors looked like they had not been vacummed, the bathroom floor had finger nail polish dropped on the floor and looked like someone had attempted to clean it up but made more of a mess, toilets in the bar were disgusting at the start of the night, and hadnt been cleaned from the night or day before, the hostel was just generally not clean. When we got to the hostel, there was confusion with payment after hostel world took 10% of full cost, i think this was the staff member who did not explain ti overly well for a large group. $20 for a room key each is absolutely not called for when you are with a group. 6 x 20= $120. I think it was more to the point that I had not seen anything one website about deposit for room card. I have travelled before and stayed in alot of hostels... $20 is a bit rich.

The property's response is

Hi,
I’m glad you enjoyed our location – we love how close we are to St Kilda beach as well. Given our location, parking is unfortunately at times difficult, particularly on sunny days! We do provide underground secure parking for $10 per night. Furthermore there is free 24 hour parking across the road.
The $20 security deposit is industry standard amongst all hostels in Melbourne, regardless of group size. It is our only security on our property that we have.
safe travels,
BASE crew

Liked: Staff were friendly, cant fault them and the location is great.

Disliked: Cramped rooms, lack of storage, not very clean, over the top partying, was like a nightclub downstairs each night of the week, and guests must pass through the bar/party area to enter or exit hostel or go to reception area which isn't great if your just there for a quiet stay.

Liked: As well as people travelling with other peoole there was a lot of people on there own, like me, and they were all very friendly. The staff were helpful and nice. The location is good because as well as being by the beach there is a tram stop which gives you access to the city easily and regularly.

Disliked: The only thing that I disliked about the property was thst often the 'chillout' area downstairs was messy due to people not tidying up after themselves but this is not through the fault of the hostel.
